OpenVMS AXPGUP01_062 Alpha V6.2 X11/Motif Adapater ECO Summary
NOTE: An OpenVMS saveset or PCSI installation file is stored
on the Internet in a self-expanding compressed file.
The name of the compressed file will be kit_name-dcx_vaxexe
for OpenVMS VAX or kit_name-dcx_axpexe for OpenVMS Alpha.
Once the file is copied to your system, it can be expanded
by typing RUN compressed_file. The resultant file will
be the OpenVMS saveset or PCSI installation file which
can be used to install the ECO.

PRODUCT: ATI[TM] Mach64 ISA Graphics Adapter
S3 Trio32/64 PCI Graphics Adapter
DECwindows Motif[R] for OpenVMS Alpha
OP/SYS: OpenVMS Alpha
SOURCE: Digital Equipment Corporation
ECO INFORMATION:
ECO Kit Name: AXPGUP01_062
ECO Kits Superseded by This ECO Kit: None
ECO Kit Approximate Size: 1836 Blocks
Kit Applies To: OpenVMS Alpha V6.2, V6.2-1H1
System/Cluster Reboot Necessary: Yes
ECO KIT SUMMARY:
An ECO kit exists for X11/Motif Adapter Support for OpenVMS Alpha
V6.2 through V6.2-1H1. This kit addresses the following problems:
o This kit contains the images required to provide X11/Motif
support for the ATI Mach64 ISA Graphics Adapter and S3
Trio32/64 PCI Graphics Adapter on V6.2-based OpenVMS Alpha
Systems.
o This kit also contains a new keyboard driver to correct
problems with the system bell.
INSTALLATION NOTES:
After this remedial kit is installed, the following steps should be
performed:
o Shut down the system.
o If applicable, install the ATI Mach64 ISA card or S3 Trio32/64
PCI card. The cards may also be installed at a later time.
o If the ATI Mach64 card is being used, the card must be configured
from the console. To do this follow these steps:
o Power on the system.
o For ISA systems, at the >>> prompt, type:
>>> isacfg -mk -slot 3 -handle isa--vga -etype 1 -ena 1
In the example above, the ISA slot number is 3. When
the command is entered, the ISA slot number can be any
currently unused slot. The "isacfg -all" command will
display complete information about current ISA devices,
and the SHOW CONFIG command will give a summary.
Type INIT at the prompt.
NOTE: If the Mach64 card is removed at a later date,
use the "ISACFG -RM -SLOT 3" command to remove
the entry from the ISA information. In the
example, the slot number is 3. On your system,
it is the slot to which you assigned the card.
o For EISA systems, the ECU (EISA Configuration Utility) must
be run before the card will be recognized. Select the "Add
or Delete Card" option, pick an unused slot, and select the
"Standard VGA Controller" option. Follow the directions given
by the ECU to save the information and exit. The device will
be identified as a "PHI8041" generic ID. The autoconfiguration
code will then probe for the Mach64.
o Boot the system.
If the system has previously been setup to run X11/Motif, the
Motif login box should appear after the boot sequence logs
off. If system parameters are too low, you may need to
perform an AUTOGEN, the Motif startup procedures will inform
you of any requirements.
If Motif has not previously been installed, install it now,
following the normal Motif installation procedure.
NOTE: The SYSGEN parameter VIRTUALPAGECOUNT must be at least
400000 for the X11 display server to function. A
warning message and instructions will be displayed if
there is not enough virtual pages available.
After installation, the screen resolution and other parameters
may be tailored.
If Motif does not start, check to make sure that Motif has
been installed, and the WINDOW_SYSTEM SYSGEN parameter is set
to 1. If the system indicates that no graphics were found (or
a SHOW DEV G does not display any devices), then you probably
need to run the ECU or issue the ISACFG command from the
console.
ATI/S3 Known Restrictions:
o The default pixel resolution is set to 1024 x 768. This
resolution is available on most multi-sync monitors.
These options support both lower, as well as higher
resolutions (2 megabytes DRAM min). To change the
resolution rename:
SYS$MANAGER:DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.TEMPLATE
to
SYS$MANAGER:DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.COM
and add the following lines to the appropriate place
following the instructions inside the
SYS$MANAGER:DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.COM file:
$ DECW$XSIZE_IN_PIXELS == 1280
$ DECW$YSIZE_IN_PIXELS == 1024
o Lower resolutions of 640 x 480 and 800 x 600 are also
available, but are not recommended since many X11/Motif
applications make assumptions about minimum screen size.
ATI Known Restrictions:
o When using 1024 x 768 resolution, performance can be
enhanced by defining the logical:
$ DEFINE/SYSTEM DECW$SERVER_FIFO_LOW_WATER_MARK 4
in the private server setup file (see above). If random
line flashing occurs, increase the value, and restart the
server. The default value of 8 is required for 1280 x 1024
operation.
S3 Known Restrictions:
o S3 Trio32/64 adapters are currently supported on the
primary PCI bus only.
