ECO KIT SUMMARY:
An ECO kit exists for Digital HiNote and HiNote Ultra BIOS V1.3.
This kit addresses the following problems:
The following briefly explains the enhancements made in this
release for HiNote users:
- One of the most important benefits of this release is
that HiNote users will automatically receive the
dramatically-enhanced functionality of the HiNote Ultra
system BIOS, including suspend/resume password support,
etc.
- Significant enhancements have been made to the video code
which allow the use of high-color modes on the internal
LCD (previously, these modes were supported only on an
external CRT).
- Automatic display power selection has been added,
allowing longer battery life when normal 640x480 video
modes are used when operating from battery.
- Significant enhancements have been to the VGA BIOS which
improve compatibility with the IBM VGA standard.
- The system BIOS now supports automatic resume from modem
ring-detect.
- If the keyboard deck was opened while the system was in
Standby, the system would turn On - it will now allow the
machine to enter Suspend mode.
- Significantly extended PCMCIA ATA drive support allows
booting from a broader variety of PCMCIA hard disks, as
well as the ability to suspend/resume and continue use of
the HDD.
- Added support for 19.2K baud serial I/O through the BIOS.
- Added support for passwords on Resume.
- Added "Supervisor" passwords for better system security.
- The Power Button is now ignored when the Lid Switch is
set to run in suspend/resume mode. This will prevent the
system from being accidentally turned on when in a
carrying bag.
- In the past, the system would automatically enter "FAST"
mode after waking up from Standby or resume. Now the
HiNote will restore its previous operating speed.
- In order to significantly improve battery life in Suspend
when a PCMCIA card is installed, the SETUP default is now
"PCMCIA Power Off in Suspend". This will also prevent
problems with some networks which demand that PCMCIA
cards be powered-off during suspend mode.
- Improved password code robustness now prevents determined
users from bypassing the password prompt even with user-
written programs.
- Dramatically improved floppy disk drive performance when
using 720K-byte diskettes.
- Added the ability to set the system speed to Half Speed
in SETUP.
The following briefly explains the updates/fixes made in this
release for HiNote users:
- Rapidly pushing the power button, or continually holding
down the power button could cause the system to hang-up -
this has now been fixed.
- Immediately closing the LCD panel after suspending the
system could in some cases allow the system to continue
to run with the LCD closed - this no longer occurs.
- Within Windows, the potential existed for a spurious "32-
bit Disk Error" report to appear when inserting or
removing an AC adapter (or PCMCIA cards); this has been
eliminated.
- Eliminated video initialization problems which could
cause a hang-up upon wake up from standby or resume mode.
- Some serial printers could receive inadvertent "garbage
characters" when the system was suspended while the
printer was attached - this has been corrected.
- Significantly enhanced functionality in the palette hot
keys (Fn-F5 and Fn-F6) improve the mapping of colors on
the system's internal LCD display.
- More effective power management techniques have been
included in the BIOS to improve battery life.
- If SETUP was invoked immediately after a power-on, it
would report incorrect memory and hard disk sizes - the
proper information is now reported.
- The video code has been improved to eliminate a temporary
flash on the internal LCD which could occur following
Resume or Standby.
- If the "Set Factory Defaults" option was chosen in SETUP,
the power button would not work properly until the system
was rebooted - this has been fixed.
- If Standby was manually invoked while loading Windows,
the potential existed for Windows not to wake-up properly
- this has been corrected.
- The automatic suspend and standby time-outs would
sometimes not work properly if the hard disk drive time-
out were set to the same timing value in SETUP - this now
works correctly.
- PCMCIA operation detection has been added to the code,
preventing the system from automatically entering Standby
or Suspend while PCMCIA devices are active.
- Occasionally, the system could wake-up from Standby
automatically following an auto-Standby time-out. This
will no longer occur.
In addition to the above improvements made in the Digital HiNote
BIOS, both HiNote and HiNote Ultra users will benefit from the
following enhancements and corrections:
- The Lid-Switch functionality has been redefined to reduce
user confusion. Now, the Lid Switch has two modes. In
Suspend/Resume mode, the machine will automatically
suspend and resume when the lid is opened or closed. In
Desktop CRT mode, the system will continue to run when
the lid is closed, and video will automatically be routed
to the CRT port, allowing it to run with an external
monitor.
- The system now supports applications which use the CMOS
clock to wake-up from suspend mode automatically.
- Microsoft's diagnostics package, MSD, no longer reports
the presence of a floating point co-processor in 33MHz
systems which do not have a co-processor.
- The Fn-F1 (Slow Mode) key functionality has been changed.
In the past, pressing this key was permanent, in that it
automatically recorded "Half-speed On" in the system's
SETUP. Now, this key is only temporary - the system will
return to the SETUP-programmed speed whenever SETUP is
run or the system is rebooted.
- Corrected hardware/BIOS interactions with HiNote Ultra
systems containing a new version of the internal chip
set, which could cause the system to hang-up when
communicating with PCMCIA cards. This same fix corrects
similar difficulties with modems or network cards in
HiNote systems equipped with the PCMCIA Port Replicator
option.
- Plug-and-Play has been enhanced to work properly with
Windows-95, eliminating possible crash problems and
correcting the information reported to Windows-95.
- Video timings have been improved to permit the use of
640x480x256 modes on the LCD on low-end machines.
- The mouse driver functionality has been improved to
prevent system hang-ups with some third-party mouse
drivers.
- Pathworks now works properly with XIRCOM printer-port-
attached network modules.
- Fixed a potential premature full-charge indication when
the system was powered-on within two minutes of starting
a battery charge on a dead battery.
- Eliminated potential false very-low-battery warnings when
the system was resumed with a battery with less than
~~25% capacity remaining.
- Corrected a rare, spurious "Hard Disk 1 Failure" error
message which could occur at power-up.
- Updated parallel port code to run properly with XIRCOM
PE3 LPT-attached network adapters.
- Corrected a problem with OS/2 Warp, where the system
could hang-up upon mouse movements after exiting the ROM-
based SETUP program.
- Eliminated problems with some PCMCIA network adapters not
initializing properly following a Ctrl-Alt-Del reboot.
- Corrected HDD interface timing with 33 MHz machines using
Quantum HDDs.
- Eliminated system hang-up which occurs when users attempt
to use PCMCIA cards when the system is running in half-
speed mode.
- Using the Fn-F7 (Speaker enable) key on the Ultra could
cause PCMCIA hard drives to turn off, requiring that the
drive be removed and reinserted to work again. This is
now corrected.
- Power management has in general been made more robust,
eliminating some possible hang-up conditions when exiting
or entering Standby or Suspend.
- The hard disk drive would previously not spin-down
following a Standby; this now works correctly.
- Plug-and-Play support has been enhanced to allow the IBM
Token Ring card to work in the Ultra (this is a hardware
conflict between IBM's token ring standard and the
SoundBlaster compatible audio standard).
- Eliminated potential for spurious keyboard controller
errors which could occur at power-up.
