Hello Volumizers,

Let us introduce ourselves. Bob Brown is the Engineering
Manager for SGI's OpenGL Volumizer. Joe Quinlan has recently
taken on the Volumizer product marketing manager role. The
previous Volumizer product manager, Steve McGuigan, has moved on
to manage OpenGL.

We are writing to you to explain some recent decisions that we
have taken concerning Volumizer.

Firstly, we have decided to reinstate Volumizer to active
development status.

This is a change from our announcement at the most recent
SIGGRAPH. We have heard your outcry when we explained at
SIGGRAPH that Volumizer would go into "maintenance mode",
implying that there would be no new features in Volumizer, but
that we would continue to fix bugs. Even after SIGGRAPH we
received numerous emails and phone calls from Volumizer users
protesting this decision.

We apologize for the consternation that we caused. Our earlier
decision was based on the assumption that we would predominantly
be working with a group of customers for whom we would create
custom volume rendering solutions. Your outcry made it clear
that there are a large number of users who want to build their
own solutions, based on Volumizer.

To prevent this situation from recurring, we have formed a
Volumizer Business Team, with representation from both
engineering and marketing departments. The Volumizer Business
Team is currently made up of:

        - Bob Brown, Engineering Manager
        - Dave Akers, Volumizer Lead Engineer
        - Chikai Ohazama, Solutions Engineering
        - Joe Quinlan, Volumizer Product Marketing Manager
        - Michael Brown, Sciences Solutions Manager
        - Chris Henn, Manager Visual Supercomputing

The Business Team is currently working hard to develop a roadmap
for Volumizer, which it will present at Visualization '99
(October 24-29, 1999). The team will host a Volumizer Birds of a
Feather (BOF) meeting during this conference. For those of you
who won't be able to make it to the conference, we will be
posting a report on the BOF to the info-volumizer mailing list
so that you will also be aware of our Volumizer roadmap.

We would appreciate your input into this process during the next
few weeks. Please email Joe Quinlan (jquinlan@sgi.com) with your
thoughts and requirements.

Best Regards,

Joe Quinlan
