RGBA question

Hi

It is true that disk data with format LUMINANCE and type UNSIGNED_BYTE
may be stored externally with RGBA or LUMINANCE_ALPHA format and type
UNSIGNED_BYTE.

Is there any circumstance in which a disk format of RGBA could be stored
as anything other than RGBA externally?
