Microsoft Site Server Version 2.0

Service Pack 1 (SP1) Readme

Welcome

Welcome to Microsoft® Site Server (MSS) Service Pack 1 (SP1), a maintenance release for version 2.0 of Microsoft Site Server.

MSS provides a comprehensive set of standards-based, commercial-grade server applications for creating, deploying, and performing advanced management tasks for Internet and intranet communities.

Please read this document thoroughly before installing MSS SP1. This document contains important information regarding the content and installation of MSS SP1.

What's in MSS Service Pack 1?

This Service Pack includes bug fixes and other information important to successful implementations of Site Server 2.0. Due to the integrated nature of MSS components, it is imperative that you read this file in its entirety before installing the Service Pack.

  • Service Pack 1 Updates (bug fixes) for MSS 2.0 components

The root directory of the SP1 installation CD contains the following subdirectories:

Directory What it contains
\Alpha SP1 server components for the DEC Alpha platform
\Bin Autorun executables
\Support Symbol files
\I386 SP1 server components for Intel CPUs
\Win95 SP1 Usage Analyst and Site Analyst components for Windows 95

Hardware and Software Requirements

The Service Pack updates can be installed only on those computers that have one or more MSS version 2.0 products installed.

Installing Service Pack 1 Components

Installing the Service Pack 1 Updates

SP1 contains all updates since the initial MSS 2.0 release. When you install the SP1 updates, only the files relevant to the Site Server components currently installed on your computer are applied.

For a list of bug fixes in this release, and other related Knowledge Base articles, see the KBRead.htm file in the root directory of the installation CD.

To install the SP1 updates from the CD, click the following setup link that is relevant to your hardware platform, and follow the instructions on the screen:

Command Line Operation

SP1 supports the following command line arguments:

Switch Description
-m Unattended mode (silent install)
-u Uninstall the hotfix (only available if an uninstall directory was originally created)
-f Force apps closed at shutdown
-n Don't create Uninstall directory
-z Don't reboot after install

Concatenation of these arguments is supported. The syntax for these operations are as follows:

    <cd-rom drive>\<platform path>\update.exe -<switch>

    e.g., d:\i386\update.exe -m -z -n

To view these options at any time, use the "-?" switch.

Installing Symbol Files

Each program file in MSS has a corresponding symbol file that is used to find the cause of MSS component program faults.

To install the symbol files corresponding to the new binaries in SP1, type the following at the command prompt (assuming your CD-ROM drive is D:, your symbol files are located in the C:\Winnt\Symbols directory, and you are installing the files for an I386 machine):

    xcopy /s /u /d /r /i d:\support\debug\i386 c:\winnt\symbols

This command will copy the SP1 .dbg files over the existing versions of these files. The XCOPY command shown will copy only those .dbg files that are already installed (/u switch), and only those with a more recent time-date stamp (/d switch).

Known Issues

Log files that you import to the Usage Analyst database will reflect more accurate data after installing SP1.
