xli is an enhancement to xloadimage, which, itself is an enhancment of xsetroot, the standard utility for changing your desktop background in X. The major benefit of xli is that it recognizes more than just xbm files. It recognizes the following image formats:

xli also has a myriad of options for displaying your image, either within a window, or on the root window itself. From the command line, do a 'xli -help' for options.
