socksv5 lets UNIX hosts behind a firewall gain full access to the Internet without requiring direct IP reachability. socksv5 requires a SOCKS daemon running on a host that can communicate directly with hosts behind the firewall and with hosts on the Internet. socksv5 is based on the original SOCKS, written by David Koblas (koblas@netcom.com), and the IETF AFT working group. socks5-1.0r11: description + notes
The socks5 daemon can run:
- standalone
- pre-forking, by adding the
-pflag- threaded, by adding the
-tflag if you configured with the--with-threadsoptions and the operating system supports POSIX threads- through inetd, by adding the
-iflagsocks runs in threaded mode if the operating system supports POSIX threads. Because the optimum mode is highly operating system and hardware dependent, it is impossible to state the best mode.
Note: This build is configured with pthreads support, but no encryption. The runsocks program (transparent socksification by substituting a socks-aware shared library at run time) works for most applications. The official
socks5-v1.0r11.patch1signal setting fix is included.Before using the sock5 clients you will need to customize your
/etc/libsocks5.conffile, and set yourSOCKS5_SERVER(and perhapsSOCKS_NS) environment variables.Before starting the socks5 server you will need to customize your
/etc/socks5.conffile. The examples in/usr/freeware/etc/socks5/egmay be helpful. The socks5 server will be started automatically when the system boots if you enable it via chkconfig.Special thanks to Andrea Suatoni (a.suatoni@itaca.it) for helping port this package to IRIX.
