Midnight Commander is a visual shell much like a file manager, only with way more features, like the ability to ftp, view tar, zip files, and poke into RPMs for specific files. mc runs in text mode, but also includes mouse support if you are running GPM. gmc is the GNOME version.
mc-4.5.55: description + notes
mcserv is the server program for the Midnight Commander networking file system. It provides access to the host file system to clients running the Midnight file system (currently, only the Midnight Commander file manager). If you want to have it started automatically at boot time execute "
chkconfig mcserv on
" as root. The web site has screen shots and documentation.
- Subshell support for SGI
tcsh
may not work; ifmc
hangs at startup try running "mc -u
".- mc runs best inside
xterm
. If you want to run it from withinxwsh
(perhaps because you want to specify-c
for color support) try invokingxwsh
as follows:xwsh -noscrollbar -xrm 'xwsh*keyMapping1:' -e mc -xAdd "-u
", "-c
" or other options after "-x
". TheAlt
key probably won't work; useEsc
emulation instead.
