gmake-3.80: description + notes

This is the GNU version of the Unix make utility (a programmer's tool for automating building of software.)

This make is installed as gmake to avoid conflicts with the IRIX make, smake, and/or pmake.

Note that the default documentation still uses the name make (rather than gmake), so please don't let this confuse you.

gmake is most useful and handy in order to build other freeware on IRIX. In fact many freeware packages use GNU make specific features, so you may be better off to use it as your default make utility.

See the man page and/or the bundled GNU texinfo files for full details. The GNU Make home page also has useful information.
