Regarding Extended Attributes: A paragraph on supporting the "Accessed Using" notion would be very good. "As the next version of NFS must be designed for use not only in its traditional Small Private Area Networks but also on the Internet, the ability to support the access of files whose content is not understandable by applications existing on the local machine is considered important. This is even more so due to the increasing availability of programs that are platform neutral and the ability of more machines to run them. The proliferation of file formats on the Internet and the increase in the number of small devices on the Internet is a further consideration. Mechanisms to download the programs that can help "access" a file are thus necessary in a file access protocol designed for the Internet. " In section 7.2 " Caches often improve the latency associated with File Access in Internet environments. The ability to cache files at a proxy and validate these caches is an important feature in wide area file systems. Validation and leasing protocols to validate large caches would become increasingly important as the Internet grows explosively. A next generation NFS protocol should also be designed with this in mind."
