I guess the obvious answer is wildcards and glob'ing on the server. 
This would not help the UNIX clients much, since the shell and other
stuff would filter this out at a much higher level.  It certainly should
help PC-NFS clients.  On the other hand, it puts a greater load on the
server, so I would not be in favor of it.
