This statement is intended to provide as clear and complete an answer as possible at the current time. Neither NetWare Lite 1.1 nor Personal NetWare 1.0 are compatible with Windows 95. No upgrade or change will be created for NetWare Lite. Upgrade plans for Personal NetWare customers cannot be relayed at this time. However, Novell is totally committed to providing a Windows-95 compatible solution for our small network customers. Specific information on this solution will be announced as soon as possible. We recommend that wherever possible, Personal NetWare customers remain on a Windows 3.x platform for the time being. Since the majority of small business customers appear to be taking a cautious approach to installation of Windows 95, we anticipate this will not be a great inconvenience. Personal NetWare customers who are forced to use Windows 95 immediately, should not install Windows 95 on any Personal NetWare servers. Novell Technical Support can provide limited assistance for Windows 95 on a Personal Netware "client only" machine, however, we cannot support customers with Windows 95 on a server or client-server machine. --------------------------------------------------------------------- TITLE: FAQ: Personal NetWare and Windows 95 DOCUMENT ID: TID1202113 DOCUMENT REVISION: 3 DATE: 30AUG95 ISSUE: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT PERSONAL NETWARE WITH WINDOWS 95++ Q. Does Personal NetWare work with Windows 95? A. Many Novell peer-to-peer network customers have been asking for information on compatibility with Windows 95. NOTE: For detailed instructions on installing the Personal NetWare Client (VLMs) on a Windows 95 computer please see document titled "Integrating PNW and Windows 95". Q. Is Personal NetWare a 32-bit client? A. Personal NetWare is currently a 16-bit client. Q. Windows 95 includes some peer-to-peer functionality. Will a Personal NetWare peer-to-peer workstation/server communicate with a Windows 95 peer-to-peer workstation/server? Or vice versa? A. It is not the intended design of either product to provide this type of connectivity or communication. As it has been with Microsoft's Windows for Workgroups, Windows 95 can coexist on the same computer or the same network segment as Personal NetWare, but the two competing products will not communicate with each other. Q. Is the Windows 95 Explorer utility functional with Personal NetWare shared resources? A. Yes. The Windows 95 Explorer functions properly with Personal NetWare shared resources. Q. Is the Windows 95 Network Neighborhood utility functional with Personal NetWare shared resources? A. Personal NetWare shared resources cannot be viewed or administered through the Windows 95 Network Neighborhood utility. This is expected, because Windows 95 was not designed to detect Personal NetWare resources. All Personal NetWare resources can be administered through Personal NetWare's own windows utilities (NETW.EXE). Q. Can NETW.EXE be used on a Windows 95 workstation? A. Yes. NETW can be used to map drives, capture ports, etc. However, the "permanent" feature does not work with Windows 95. You should use login scripts to establish your workstations default network environment (mappings, captures). Q. Does printing work in Personal NetWare / Windows 95 environment? A. Yes, provided the steps outlined in document "Integrating PNW and Windows 95" are followed exactly. NOTE: Print jobs will not show up in the Personal NetWare NETW windows utility, but are visible in the NET utility (DOS). ++Windows and Windows 95 are registered trademarks of Microsoft Corporation. --------------------------------------------------------------------- TITLE: Integrating PNW and Windows 95 DOCUMENT ID: TID1202079 DOCUMENT REVISION: 5 DATE: 28AUG95 ISSUE: INTEGRATING PERSONAL NETWARE 1.0 (VLMs) WITH WINDOWS 95++ GENERAL COMPATIBILITY STATEMENT: Many Novell peer-to-peer network customers have been asking for information on compatibility with Windows 95. PREFACE: The following documentation is being provided as a courtesy to Novell customers who may wish to experiment with using Personal NetWare with Windows 95. This document provides step-by-step instructions to integrate the Personal NetWare Client (VLMs) with Windows 95. The information provided is for one system configuration that has appeared to work in a test environment. The document describes only one possible method of configuring Personal NetWare and Windows 95; other methods may be possible. Extensive testing on this scenario has not been completed at this time. As further testing is performed and more information is available this document will be updated. If you decide to experiment with Personal NetWare on Windows 95, Novell strongly recommends doing regular backups of your data, which would be appropriate in any environment, but even more so in an untested configuration. This document is not intended to be an introduction to or instructions on the use of Windows 95. This document assumes you are running Personal NetWare v1.0 on Windows v3.1 or v3.11. It also assumes patches from PNWUPD.EXE and PNWUPW.EXE have been applied. If these patches have not been applied, they are available from CompuServe, Novell's WWW site, or Novell's BBS. STEP-BY-STEP INSTALLATION/CONFIGURATION INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Perform the upgrade to Windows 95 with Personal NetWare loaded. 2. Launch Windows 95. The following series of error messages may be displayed when Windows 95 starts: Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application. The Windows registry or system.ini file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program. If you still want to use the application associated with this device file try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file. C:\windows\system\vmm32\vnetbios.vxd Press a key to continue. If these errors occur, press any key to continue. The next step is to configure Windows 95 to run with the VLMs. Once Windows 95 is configured to run with the VLMs, the errors will no longer occur. 3. Once Windows 95 has loaded, open My Computer | Control Panel | Network (double-click). 4. The Network Control Panel should not have any network components installed. If there are network components installed, remove them. 5. Click Add 6. Click Client 7. Click on Novell. You will see two options under Network Clients. 8.
