TITLE: Local Authentication Causes Errors DOCUMENT ID: TID800149 DOCUMENT REVISION: 1 DATE: 04Jul95 ALERT STATUS: Yellow README FOR: NA NOVELL PRODUCT and VERSION: PERSONAL NETWARE V1.0 ABSTRACT: NA --------------------------------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER: THE ORIGIN OF THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL TO NOVELL. NOVELL MAKES EVERY EFFORT WITHIN ITS MEAN TO VERIFY THIS INFORMATION. HOWEVER, THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THIS DOCUMENT IS FOR YOUR INFORMATION ONLY. NOVELL MAKES NO EXPLICIT OR IMPLIED CLAIMS TO THE VALIDITY OF THIS INFORMATION. --------------------------------------------------------------------- SYMPTOMS: After changing the AUTHENTICATION Module (located on the PNW Server Configuration screen) from FULL to LOCAL, users may experience one or more of the problems or errors listed below: 1. When logging into the workgroup, a user that normally is prompted for a password is NOT prompted for the password, but the user appears to be logged into the workgroup. 2. The user is logged into the workgroup (see 1 above), and then tries to map a drive or capture a network printer (where the resource resides on a server other than the local server), the following message is returned: "NETc-1.0-89F2: Server does not recognize your user account. Try logging in again. Could not map to on server ", or when trying to capture the last line is: "... Could not capture LPTx to on server ." 3. The user is logged into the workgroup (see 1 above), launches the NET ADMIN utility and tries to change the server configuration of a server other than the local server, the same message as in 2 above appears in a dialog box. 4. The user is logged into the workgroup (see 1 above), launches the NET ADMIN utility, and tries to change the LOCAL server configuration. The Properties box opens, the user is able to change server's configuration, but when trying to save the new configuration the error message in 2 above is returned in a dialog box. The above happens regardless of the user or user rights (including Supervisor). CAUSES The Authentication Module on the local server has been changed to Local Authentication. SOLUTIONS The server MUST be changed back to FULL AUTHENTICATION. Unfortunately, with the current release of Personal NetWare, it is not possible to change it back using the NET ADMIN utility (or any PNW utility). However, following are two options to change Authentication back to Full: OPTION 1: Restore a backup of the C:\NWCNTL directory on the local server. OPTION 2: Copy the original files for the server's configuration from the installation diskettes to the C:\NWCNTL directory on the local server. NOTE: If Personal NetWare was included as part of Novell DOS 7, the files will be on Disk 5 of 6. If Personal NetWare was purchased as a separate product (not included with Novell DOS 7), the files will be on Disk 3 of 3. 2a. Copy the original server configuration file from the disk indicated above by using the following syntax: Copy A:\SERVER. C:\NWCNTL NOTE: SERVER does not have and extension. 2b. Reboot the server computer. Load the network drivers NOTE: SERVER.EXE will not load. 2c. Log into the network as the user of this machine. 2d. Run SETUP. Go into the Network Setup. Click on Share This Computer's Resources. Enter the user name of this computer if prompted. Save, exit, and restart. NOTE: SERVER.EXE loads, but, is not in a workgroup. 2e. Log into the workgroup. If prompted to move the local server to the workgroup answer Yes. 2f. Run SETUP /FIRST. Join the workgroup. Recreate the shared directories and printers for this server. Save and Exit. If a dialog box appears stating that it cannot create the User account because it may already exist, select OK and continue. 2g. Login into the workgroup. You may want to check the network directories and printers to be sure they are setup properly. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Any trademarks referenced in this document are the property of their respective owners.
