Does Personal NetWare work with Windows 95? A. Many Novell peer-to-peer network customers have been asking for information on compatibility with Windows 95. This statement is intended to provide as clear and complete an answer as possible at the current time. Neither NetWare Lite 1.1 nor Personal NetWare 1.0 are compatible with Windows 95. No upgrade or change will be created for NetWare Lite. Upgrade plans for Personal NetWare customers cannot be relayed at this time. However, Novell is totally committed to providing a Windows-95 compatible solution for our small network customers. Specific information on this solution will be announced as soon as possible. We recommend that wherever possible, Personal NetWare customers remain on a Windows 3.x platform for the time being. Since the majority of small business customers appear to be taking a cautious approach to installation of Windows 95, we anticipate this will not be a great inconvenience. Personal NetWare customers who are forced to use Windows 95 immediately, should not install Windows 95 on any Personal NetWare servers. Novell Technical Support can provide limited assistance for Windows 95 on a Personal Netware "client only" machine, however, we cannot support customers with Windows 95 on a server or client-server machine. NOTE: For detailed instructions on installing the Personal NetWare Client (VLMs) on a Windows 95 computer please see document titled "Integrating PNW and Windows 95". Q. Is Personal NetWare a 32-bit client? A. Personal NetWare is currently a 16-bit client. Q. Windows 95 includes some peer-to-peer functionality. Will a Personal NetWare peer-to-peer workstation/server communicate with a Windows 95 peer-to-peer workstation/server? Or vice versa? A. It is not the intended design of either product to provide this type of connectivity or communication. As it has been with Microsoft's Windows for Workgroups, Windows 95 can coexist on the same computer or the same network segment as Personal NetWare, but the two competing products will not communicate with each other. Q. Is the Windows 95 Explorer utility functional with Personal NetWare shared resources? A. Yes. The Windows 95 Explorer functions properly with Personal NetWare shared resources. Q. Is the Windows 95 Network Neighborhood utility functional with Personal NetWare shared resources? A. Personal NetWare shared resources cannot be viewed or administered through the Windows 95 Network Neighborhood utility. This is expected, because Windows 95 was not designed to detect Personal NetWare resources. All Personal NetWare resources can be administered through Personal NetWare's own windows utilities (NETW.EXE). Q. Can NETW.EXE be used on a Windows 95 workstation? A. Yes. NETW can be used to map drives, capture ports, etc. However, the "permanent" feature does not work with Windows 95. You should use login scripts to establish your workstations default network environment (mappings, captures). Q. Does printing work in Personal NetWare / Windows 95 environment? A. Yes, provided the steps outlined in document "Integrating PNW and Windows 95" are followed exactly. NOTE: Print jobs will not show up in the Personal NetWare NETW windows utility, but are visible in the NET utility (DOS). ++Windows and Windows 95 are registered trademarks of Microsoft Corporation. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Any trademarks referenced in this document are the property of their respective owners.
