TITLE: Pagemaker 5 and Personal NetWare Compatibil DOCUMENT ID: TID1003354 DOCUMENT REVISION: 2 DATE: 18May1995 ALERT STATUS: Yellow README FOR: NA NOVELL PRODUCT and VERSION: Personal NetWare v1.0 ABSTRACT: NA --------------------------------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER: THE ORIGIN OF THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL TO NOVELL. NOVELL MAKES EVERY EFFORT WITHIN ITS MEAN TO VERIFY THIS INFORMATION. HOWEVER, THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THIS DOCUMENT IS FOR YOUR INFORMATION ONLY. NOVELL MAKES NO EXPLICIT OR IMPLIED CLAIMS TO THE VALIDITY OF THIS INFORMATION. --------------------------------------------------------------------- SYMPTOMS: Pagemaker 5.0 returns an error "A network error was detected. Please verify you are properly logged in..." when trying to load on a Personal Netware workstation. It is a Personal Netware only enviroment with no other Novell Netware connectivity. Pagemaker is installed locally and NOT being ran across the PNW network. If VLMs are removed from memory, Pagemaker 5.0 returns an error "A copy of Pagemaker with network ID XXXX is already in use. You can restart Pagemaker once the other user quits their copy...." The above symptoms are seen with the Pagemaker single-user version and also 5-user versions. CAUSES: The issue resides between Pagemaker v5.0 and Netware.drv. For Personal NetWare Windows functionality, modifications are made to the SYSTEM.INI; under [BOOT] the network= line is set to network=netware.drv. Upon loading, Pagemaker checks to see if a Novell Network present, and if found (through NetWare.drv) a NCP OPEN SEMAPHORE call is made. The NCP OPEN SEMAPHORE is supported on Novell NetWare bindery based 2.X and 3.X servers only. PNW is not a bindery based Novell Network and does not provide bindery emulation functionality. SOLUTIONS: Pagemaker v5.0 will not work in a Personal Netware only environment. PNW does not support the NCP OPEN SEMAPHORE call. If the network environment includes PNW and other Novell Netware bindery based 2.X or 3.X servers which the user attaches, Pagemaker will load without the above mentioned errors. If Netware.drv is removed from the network= line, under [Boot] in SYSTEM.INI, Pagemaker will load but user will not have PNW functionality in Windows. NOTE: Adobe, who purchased Aldus Pagemaker, has addressed the compatiblity isuue with Pagemaker v6.0. Pagemaker v6.0 will work in a Personal NetWare only enviroment. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Any trademarks referenced in this document are the property of their respective owners.
