Users configuration: A local network with a PNW server and several client nodes are connected with 10baseT cable to a hub (segment A). A 10baseT cable comes out of the hub and connects to a Shiva NetModem. The Shiva NetModem then connects to another Shiva NetModem via a telephone link. The other Shiva NetModem then has a 10baseT cable connecting it to another hub. Out of the second hub a 10baseT cable connects to a PNW server (segment B). The Shiva NetModem software is used to establish the modem link. The 2 PNW segments function properly as a local LAN but they do not "see" each other. Running NET WGFIND or NET SLIST does not find the other workgroup or server across the net modem link. CAUSE It is assumed that the PNW RIP's are being filterd by the net modems. SOLUTION Have the user log in into the local workgroup, launch NET ADMIN, go into Routes, and enter the segment address for the other segment. I.E: on the A segment, enter in the B segment address. On the B segment enter in the A segment address. After manually entering in the segment address for the segment on the "other side" of the net modem link the nodes were able to "see" each other and function across the netmodem link. The system administrator in this setup should be aware of the NET LINK parameters. If connections across the netmodems are being lost, the NET LINK parameters should be increased, i.e.: at the DOS prompt type, NET LINK 10 10 10. If these settings clear up the connection problems, then reduce to NET LINK settings back toward the default settings of NET LINK 3 2 0 until connections are stable. Type NET LINK SAVE to save those settings to the NET.CFG file. This will have to be done on each node that wishes to communicate across the netmodem link. Note however, that communications loss may be the result of the telephone connection. If this is the case, there are NO PNW ADJUSTMENTS THAT WILL FIX A TELEPHONE SYSTEM COMMUNICATIONS PROBLEM.
