NOVELL TECHNICAL INFORMATION DOCUMENT TITLE: NetWare NFS Gateway v1.1 Maintenance Patch DOCUMENT ID: TID200004 DOCUMENT REVISION: A DATE: 24SEP93 ALERT STATUS: Yellow INFORMATION TYPE: Symptom Solution README FOR: GWY160.EXE NOVELL PRODUCT and VERSION: NetWare NFS Gateway 1.1 ABSTRACT: This patch updates the NetWare NFS Gateway v1.1 product. It allows the NetWare NFS Gateway to run on NetWare 3.12 systems and it corrects several problems reported in earlier versions of the Gateway software. It can also be used on NFS Gateways running on 3.11 servers. _________________________________________________________________ DISCLAIMER THE ORIGIN OF THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL TO NOVELL. In previous versions of the Gateway, filenames were sometimes translated when no filename collision (duplication) existed. In this patch the filename conversion algorithm has been improved to prevent unnecessary filename conversion. 2. Previous versions of the NFS Gateway server terminated unexpectedly when the volume containing the shadow file system was dismounted. This patch allows the server to continue running when the shadow file system volume is dismounted. 3. Previously, a workstation accessing an NFS Gateway volume under a heavy processing load would sometimes halt. This problem has been corrected with this patch. 4. The Gateway maps NFS filenames consisting entirely of characters that are illegal under DOS to the filenames STRANGE, STRANGE0, STRANGE1, and so forth. In previous releases the LS utility incorrectly reported multiple instances of the filename STRANGE. The patch corrects this error so that LS.EXE now lists the mapped filenames correctly. 5. In previous versions of the Gateway, when the NFS servers fails, the gateway volume remains visible to the workstations. When a workstation attempts file access, a pause of several minutes occurs before the software times out. In this patch, the workstation access timeout is set for 96 seconds in the default configuration. To configure a shorter timeout interval, you can use the NFSCON utility to change the RPC retry and timeout values (Volume Configuration menu). SOLUTION The solution to these problems is to install this patch using the procedure described below in the Installation Instructions. Self-Extracting File Name: GWY160.EXE Files Included Size Date Time \ INSTALL.BAT 2967 09-30-93 4:52p PATCH.EXE 78129 01-19-93 12:18a YESNO.EXE 6189 11-13-92 4:10a NFSGW.NLM 1171558 07-07-93 7:00p NFSSHIM.NLM 482 04-19-93 4:05p NISDMAG.NLM 49840 08-31-93 3:21p PTF-F160.RTP 45064 09-03-93 2:21p GWY160.TXT (This file) Installation Instructions: Before you run the PATCH program, make sure you have the NetWare NFS Gateway v1.1 installed on your server. You need the following to install this patch: >> You need SUPERVISOR access to the Gateway server to be patched. >> You need to know the drive letter mapped to the SYS: volume for the SUPERVISOR account (usually the F: drive). >> You need to have a search drive mapped to the \PUBLIC directory of some NetWare server. This is because INSTALL.BAT uses the FLAG.EXE program, usually found in a \PUBLIC directory. >> Your DOS workstation must have a diskette drive and a hard disk where a temporary directory can be created. Temporary disk space of 3 Mbytes is needed for working storage. >> A diskette containing the patch files from GWY160.EXE. To install the patch, follow this procedure: 1. From your DOS workstation, log into the NetWare NFS Gateway v1.1 server as SUPERVISOR. 2. On the workstation's hard disk, create a temporary working directory for the patch files and NLMs. You can create this directory on any convenient local hard disk and use any appropriate name. For example: MKDIR \TEMP1 3. Make the temporary directory the current directory and transfer the patch files to this directory from the patch diskette. For example: CD \TEMP1 COPY A:*.* 4. Run the INSTALL.BAT program, supplying the drive letter mapped to the SYS: volume on the NFS Gateway server. For example, if drive F: is mapped to the SYS: volume: INSTALL F: The program updates the NLMs to include the patch. When the message "The patch is now complete" is displayed, the install program has finished executing. 5. Delete the temporary working files and directory: ERASE *.* CD \ RMDIR TEMP1 6. Down the server and restart it to run the patched NLMs. Solution Specifics: This patch incorporates extended features to run on NetWare 3.12 by updating the files NFSGW.NLM and NISDMAG.NLM. After the patch is applied, the new versions of these files are as follows: NFSGW.NLM -- Version 2.12F August 20, 1993 NISDMAG.NLM -- Version 2.12G August 31, 1993 The following new NLM is provided: NFSSHIM.NLM -- Version 2.0A April 19, 1993 This NetWare 3.12 module is provided with the patch so that you can easily reinstall it if it has been removed by uninstalling the NFS Gateway product. ÿ
