TITLE: How to Install Update and Patch Files DOCUMENT ID: TID014932 DOCUMENT REVISION: 1 DATE: 10May95 ALERT STATUS: Yellow README FOR: NA NOVELL PRODUCT and VERSION: NETWARE LITE V1.1 ABSTRACT: NA --------------------------------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER: THE ORIGIN OF THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL TO NOVELL. To try and make installing these files as easy as possible, Novell has encapsulated the update or patch files in what is referred to as a self-contained or self-extracting file. This means that the .EXE file contains many other files that can be "exploded" or "extracted" by executing the file. You should place the .EXE file into a temporary directory or into a directory that technical support has indicated. After doing that, you should execute the file. Executing the .EXE file will result in having the .EXE file and the files included in it present in the directory in which you executed it. Each update or patch fileset has self-contained instructions on how to install the update or patch files. For example, the current update fileset for NetWare Lite 1.1 is L11U05.EXE. If a file revision is made, the filename will increment to L11U06.EXE, and so on. This file contains all of the files necessary to bring the NetWare Lite code current. It also contains a text file, in this case L11U05.TXT, that gives installation instructions that can be read by any word processor or viewer that allows for text conversion from ASCII or any ASCII text editor. After you have extracted the .EXE file, you should read the .TXT file CAREFULLY so you can fully understand the steps necessary to apply the update or patch files. Following are two examples of steps taken to apply update or patch files: L11U05.EXE: This file is the update to NetWare Lite 1.1. It contains several files with a .PAT extension and one .TXT file. To extract L11U05.EXE, execute it by typing L11U05 at the DOS prompt. You need to copy the *.PAT files into the \NWLITE directory on ALL machines on the network that run NetWare Lite 1.1. After copying these file, you need to run the UPATCH command from the C:\NWLITE directory. This will apply the *.PAT files, or in other words, use the *.PAT files to update the NetWare Lite code. You can verify this process by typing UPATCH VERIFY at the C:\NWLITE prompt. NOTE: These steps are explained in the L11U05.TXT file. D70Uxx.EXE: This file is used with Novell DOS 7. The xx indicates the revision of the file. At the time of this writing the revision was 13, therefore the file is labeled D70U13.EXE. As fixes are added to this file the revision number will increment. Please be sure to watch for future revisions. This file is a self extracting compressed file. All that is needed to extract the files is to issue the command D70Uxx (replacing xx with the revision number of the file). Once the files have been extracted or uncompressed, be sure to read the D70Uxx.TXT file (once again the xx would be replaced with the revision of the file). The D70Uxx.TXT file contains installation instructions. The installation of updates and patches are fairly straightforward. However, instructions do vary. Most importantly, you should read the .TXT file after decompressing the extracting the .EXE file to make sure that you understand all instructions before making the attempt to install. If a temporary directory exists, you should use it to execute the self-extracting file. After the enclosed files have been extracted, read the .TXT file and go from there. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Any trademarks referenced in this document are the property of their respective owners.
