NOVELL TECHNICAL INFORMATION DOCUMENT TITLE: Native File Access Support Pack 2 TID #: 2963236 README FOR: nfap1sp2.exe SUPERSEDES: b3nfap1sp2.exe NOVELL PRODUCTS and VERSIONS: NetWare 5.1 Novell Native File Access Pack ABSTRACT: Updated 20AUG2002: corrections to readme only Updated 16AUG2002: UNIX.TXT, NFAU_CHG.TXT Native File Access Support Pack 2 for NetWare 5.1 July, 2002 Overview This Support Pack contains updates for all components contained in the Native File Access Pack product that runs on NetWare 5.1 only. If the file was downloaded, the Support Pack file must be extracted at the root of the drive because it contains directory paths that could exceed the DOS limits. The purpose of this Support Pack is to provide a bundle of fixes that have all been tested together. These files have undergone component testing, core OS testing, and integration testing with other Novell products. This Support Pack includes all fixes from previous Support Packs; therefore, you do not need to install earlier Support Packs before installing this Support Pack. Do not install individual files from the Support Pack. ----------------------------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER THE ORIGIN OF THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL TO NOVELL. If you are installing from CD, start with Step 2. 1) At a workstation DOS prompt, explode the file by entering NFAPSP2. Explode the file on the server's volume SYS: or on another server volume. This compressed file contains directory paths that could exceed the DOS limits. The file must be extracted in a root-level directory on your local drive or on a NetWare volume that accepts longer paths. 2) At the server console prompt, enter NWCONFIG. 3) Select Product Options > Install a Product Not Listed. 4) Depending on where the NetWare Support Pack files are located, complete one of the following: - From the local volume SYS:, press F3 and then specify the path, including the volume name (for example, SYS:\). - From a different server on the network, press F3 and then specify the full path, including the server name (for example, \VOL1:\). You will be prompted for a login name and password for the other server. The F4 option in RCONSOLE does not apply to this Support Pack. 5) Press Enter. 6) Follow the on-screen prompts. 7) After the Support Pack install is complete, review the .NCF files for accuracy. 8) If you did not choose the option to automatically reboot the server, enter RESET SERVER or RESTART SERVER at the server console. You can also enter DOWN and then restart the server by entering SERVER.EXE. If Auto Purge is not set on your server, you might want to manually purge the volume to free disk space. 2.0 Documentation In addition to this Readme file, the following sources provide additional information about the Support Pack: - UNIX.TXT contains information about using NFAP in a UNIX environment - NFAU_CHG.TXT contains a list of changes made to the UNIX portion of NFAP since the last Support Pack 3.0 Product Testing The Support Pack has undergone component testing, core OS testing, and integration testing with other Novell products. The Support Pack was also tested with the following: - NetWare 6 Support Pack 2 - NetWare 5.1 Support Pack 5 - NFS 30 Support Pack 4 - NFAP 1 Support Pack 2 - Cluster Services 1 Support Pack 4 - GroupWise 6 Support Pack 2 - GroupWise 5.5 Enhancement Pack Support Pack 5 - Novell Client 4.83 for Windows NT/2000/XP Support Pack 1 - Novell Client 3.32 for Windows 95/98 Support Pack 1 For more information about updates for the Novell Client, see TID 10062546 at http://support.novell.com. 4.0 NFAP for UNIX Issues For more information about using NFAP in a UNIX environment, see UNIX.TXT contained at the root. A list of the UNIX changes is in NFAU_CHG.TXT. 4.1 NFAP for UNIX Administration If you are using the Native File Access for UNIX portion of NFAP, you will also need to install ConsoleOne 1.3.2. ConsoleOne 1.3.2 requires JVM 1.2.2 or later. First install JVM, if not already installed, and then install ConsoleOne. The ConsoleOne install provides the option to copy the files to the server or the workstation. You should copy the files to the server if more than one workstation will be used to administer the server. You can download ConsoleOne from http://www.novell.com/downloads or if you have the Consolidated Support Pack CDs, ConsoleOne is included on CD2. You can download JVM 1.2.2 and JVM 1.3 from http://www.novell.com/downloads or, if you have the Consolidated Support Pack CDs, JVM 1.3 is included on CD 2. 5.0 NFAP for Windows Issues 5.1 Workstations Might Not Be Able to Access a Windows 2000 Primary Domain Controller If the Primary Domain Controller (PDC) is a Windows 2000 server, Windows workstations mignt not be able to access the CIFS server. To fix this, complete the following steps: 1) Specify the following parameter in SYS:\ETC\CIFS.CFG: -PDC For example: PDC ONENET 130.57.66.134 2) Enter CIFSSTOP and then CIFSSTRT. 5.2 NSS File System NSS file system is recommended for Novell Native File Access for Windows. You should create sharepoints to NSS volumes contained at the root. 5.3 Windows Filename Length Maximum The maximum length of the Windows filename and pathname is 233 characters and spaces. 5.4 PDC and CIFS on Different Subnets If the PDC and CIFS server are on different subnets, the -PDCNAME option (which uses DNS resolution) might not work. Use the -PDC option instead. 5.5 Password Changes A password change from a Windows 9x and NT4 client might fail when the default network username and password in the client's cache is not a valid combination on the CIFS server where password change is attempted. To resolve this issue, validate the username and password combination in the client's cache on the CIFS server before attempting a password change. You can validate this by attempting to access the file system on the CIFS server by browsing with Windows Network Neighborhood. 5.6 Password Changes and Case Sensitivity When the CIFS password (Simple password) on a NetWare server is changed using the NET PASSWORD command on a Windows 9x client, the client always sends the old and new passwords in all upper case. As a result of this, the regular NDS password update will not be successful if the old regular NDS password contains lowercase letters. The new password will be stored in upper case. For Windows NT/2000, the user should provide a case-sensitive password; if not, the regular NDS password update will not be successful. 5.7 CIFS Options Not Supported The following CIFS options are not supported with this release: -ASYNC -OPLOCKS -UNICODE Make sure these options are set to Off. 5.8 MS Paint "Out of Memory" Error CIFS users might occasionally see an "Out of Memory" error when using MS Paint on a Windows NT workstation. This error message is incorrect and no processes are out of memory. The error message will disappear if the data file is first saved to local storage and then copied to the remote storage directory. 6.0 NFAP for Macintosh Issues 6.1 AppleTalk Not Supported As a Transport Protocol The legacy AppleTalk protocol stack is not supported as a transport protocol in Novell Native File Access for Macintosh. Older Mac applications that have unique dependencies upon AppleTalk as a transport protocol must be updated to a version that is known to work over TCP/IP. The protocols that comprise the AppleTalk stack (TLAP, ELAP, LLAP, DDP, RTMP, AEP, ATP, NBP, ADSP, ZIP, ASP, and PAP) are not supported by Apple over TCP/IP. Novell does not support the legacy protocols either. Both Novell and Apple have embraced TCP/IP as the Internet standard transport protocol. IMPORTANT: Older NetWare for Macintosh and Prosoft versions of AFP.NLM and APPLETLK.NLM are not supported. Do not attempt to mix old Mac support NLMs with the new AFPTCP.NLM. 6.2 AFPTCP Error After installing the Support Pack and when loading AFPTCP, you might receive an error about an unresolved public symbol with NMAS_Login. To resolve the error, edit AFTPSTART.NCF and add LOAD NMASGPXY.NLM just before LOAD AFPTCP.NLM. 6.3 AFPTCP.NLM makes 32 Unlicensed Connections When AFPTCP.NLM is loaded it makes 32 unlicensed connections on each server it is loaded on. Currently, AFPTCP.NLM opens these connections for thread processes that it needs in order to better walk the tree for user logins. 6.4 Network Browser Not Available on NetWare 5.1 The network browser requires SLP version 2 that is included in NetWare 6 only. 6.5 Server MONITOR Does Not Register Mac Connections The MONITOR.NLM on the server does not register Mac connections. The active connections' Network Address list indicates "No address available." This is a known problem for connections other than NCP-based sessions. 6.6 User Authentication Method Can't Be Found If a Mac user receives an error message that says "The User Authentication Method required by this server can't be found, check the AppleShare folder in the Extensions folder and try again," this occurs because the new AFPTCP.NLM cannot coexist with earlier versions of the AFP.NLM. To resolve this, do the following: 1) Unload the old AFP.NLM and remove it from the AUTOEXEC.NCF file. 2) Unload and delete the old AFPCON.NLM and do not use it again. 3) Delete the old AFPCON configuration file in SYS:\SYSTEM\GLOBDATA.AFP if it exists. If a Mac user receives an error message that says "The User Authentication Method Required By This Server Can't Be Found," check that the user's context is in the context search list file CTXS.CFG. 6.7 Mac OS 8.x Will Not Mount Volumes Checked to Mount at Startup To resolve this, add the server volume's alias to the StartUp Items folder inside the System Folder on the Mac's local startup disk. 6.8 Updating the NMAS Login Method This support pack includes a fix for the Change Password function in the NMAS login method for AFP. To implement this change, you must update the login method. For more information on updating the login method, see TID 10069776 at http://support.novell.com. 7.0 Uninstalling the Support Pack If you selected the Backup option during the Support Pack installation, files that are overwritten by the Support Pack files are backed up to SYS:SYSTEM\NFAPSP2 or to the location you specified, so that you can restore the server to its original state if necessary. If you didn't select the Backup option, you can't uninstall the Support Pack. IMPORTANT: Do not uninstall the Support Pack if you installed any products or patches after the installation of the Support Pack. To uninstall the Support Pack, complete one of the following procedures: 4) At the server console prompt, enter NWCONFIG. 5) Select Product Options > Install a Product Not Listed. 6) Press F3 and then specify the path to the backup files (SYS:SYSTEM\NFAPSP2 or the location you specified). Or 1) At the server console prompt, enter NWCONFIG. 2) Select Product Options > View/Configure/Remove Installed Products > SPACK. 3) Press Delete and then select Yes. The Support Pack is uninstalled. 8.0 Legal Notices 8.1 Disclaimer, Export Notice, Copyright, and Patents Novell, Inc. makes no representations or warranties with respect to the contents or use of this documentation, and specifically disclaims any express or implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for any particular purpose.
