NOVELL TECHNICAL INFORMATION DOCUMENT TITLE: NetWare Cluster Services 1.01 SP4 TID #: 2963233 README FOR: cs1sp4.exe SUPERSEDES: b3cs1sp4.exe NOVELL PRODUCTS and VERSIONS: NetWare Cluster Services for NW5 NetWare 5.1 ABSTRACT: NetWare Cluster Services 1.01 Support Pack 4 July 2002 Overview This Support Pack contains updates for all components contained in the NetWare Cluster Services product only. If the Support Pack was downloaded, it must be extracted at the root of the drive because it contains directory paths that could exceed DOS limits. The purpose of this Support Pack is to provide a bundle of fixes that have all been tested together. These files have undergone component testing, core OS testing, and integration testing with other Novell products. For information on the latest Support Pack issues, see TID 10070085 at http://support.novell.com/search/kb_index.htm. If you experience problems downloading large files, refer to TID 2947202. To order the Support Pack CD, go to http://support.novell.com/tools/csp/orderinfo.html. ----------------------------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER THE ORIGIN OF THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL TO NOVELL. Confirm that Cluster Services v1.01 is installed by loading NWCONFIG.NLM, and then look in the Installed Products menu item for the NWCS 1.0.1 entry. If the entry is 1.0.0, then install Cluster Services Support Pack 1. - You must first install the NetWare 5.1 Support Pack 5 before installing the NetWare Cluster Services Support Pack. - All nodes in the cluster must be at the same software revision level. This means that all nodes in the cluster must have both NetWare 5.1 Support Pack 5 and NetWare Cluster Services Support Pack 4 before rejoining the cluster. 2.0 Support Pack Installation To upgrade a cluster to a new Support Pack, we recommend that you take the cluster down, upgrade all nodes with the NetWare and Cluster Services Support Packs, reboot all servers, and allow the cluster to reform. See Section 2.3, "Installing the Support Pack," for more information. ConsoleOne 1.3.3 and the latest ConsoleOne snap-in for Novell Cluster Services are recommended with this Support Pack and can be found at http://download.novell.com. ConsoleOne 1.3.3 and the Cluster Services snap-in are also located on the Consolidated Support Pack CD. ConsoleOne 1.3.3 is located in the \Console1\C1_132 directory and the Cluster Services snap-in is located in the \Console1\Snapins directory. The ConsoleOne snap-in for Cluster Services now provides the ability to customize a virtual server name when creating a cluster-enabled volume. 2.1 Rolling Upgrades If you want to attempt a rolling upgrade (leaving the cluster up and running services during the upgrade) instead of taking the cluster down, you must do the following: 1) Determine which of the cluster nodes will be kept active while the other nodes are being upgraded. Roughly half of the cluster should be upgraded while the other half continues to run services. When the first half has been upgraded, it will then take over the services so that the other half can be upgraded. 2) Determine which services you want to keep active during the upgrade and then migrate these resources to the nodes that will remain active. 3) Modify the Preferred Nodes list of each of the resources you want to have active and ensure that it includes nodes that are in the other half of the cluster. This allows the resources to be restarted on the upgraded nodes later. 4) Enter CLUSTER LEAVE on each of the nodes that is going to be upgraded first. This takes those nodes out of the cluster. The rest of the cluster remains active. 5) Upgrade the nodes that you've taken out of the cluster with the new version of NetWare and Cluster Services Support Packs. Do not reboot after the NetWare upgrade. 6) When both Support Pack upgrades are complete, reboot each server. As the upgraded nodes reboot, they will attempt to rejoin the cluster but will be unable to. The nodes will display a message that another node has acquired the SBD lock. This is expected behavior. 7) On one of the nodes that has not yet been upgraded, enter CLUSTER DOWN to bring down the entire remaining cluster. The upgraded nodes that have been attempting to join the cluster will now form a new cluster and will start all the resources that were running on the other cluster. Do not reboot after the NetWare upgrade. 8) Upgrade the other half of the cluster. As the nodes are upgraded and rebooted, they will rejoin the cluster. 2.2 No Mixed Clusters All nodes of a cluster must be running the same version of NetWare and the same versions of the NetWare and Cluster Services Support Pack. A cluster with a mix of NetWare 5.0 and 5.1 servers is not supported. Adding a new node to an existing cluster is now much faster than it was with previous Support Packs. To add a new node to an existing cluster after the cluster has been upgraded to the new Support Pack, use the NetWare Cluster Services Support Pack 4 installation program and select the option to add a new node to an existing cluster. This method installs Cluster Services and Cluster Services Support Pack 4 at the same time. It also saves you from having to install Cluster Services and later apply the Support Pack. 2.3 Installing the Support Pack To upgrade a cluster to a new Support Pack, you should take the cluster down, upgrade all nodes with the NetWare and Cluster Services Support Packs, reboot all servers, and allow the cluster to reform. To install the Support Pack, complete the following steps for each server in the cluster. If you are installing from CD, start with step 2. 1) If you downloaded the Support Pack, extract the file by entering CS1SP4 at the DOS prompt. 2) From the CS1SP4 directory of the Consolidated Support Pack, launch INSTALL.EXE. You must have a drive mapped to the servers where NetWare Cluster Services software will be installed. Continue through the installation screens until you get to the screen that prompts you to create a new cluster, add new nodes to an existing cluster, or upgrade software in an existing cluster. 3) Select Create a New Cluster, Add a Node to an Existing Cluster, or Upgrade Software in Existing Cluster (Support Pack Installation), and then click Next. If you select anything other than Upgrade Software in Existing Cluster, refer to the NetWare Cluster Services documentation for installation instructions. The NetWare Cluster Services Support Pack installation can create a new cluster and add nodes to an existing cluster just like the NetWare Cluster Services 1.01 installation program. 4) Specify the Directory tree, context, and name of the cluster in which software is to be upgraded. Then click Next. 5) Choose whether or not you want the servers you are upgrading or adding to your cluster to reboot after installation, and then click Next. The installation program installs or upgrades NetWare Cluster Services software on the servers in your cluster. It does not automatically load the software on the servers in your cluster. Unless you have an immediate need to keep your cluster servers running, you should choose to have your servers reboot after the installation is complete. This will ensure that NetWare Cluster Services software properly loads on new or upgraded servers in your cluster. 6) Continue through the final installation screen. 3.0 Issues For a list of known issues, see CS1_ISS.TXT located at the root of the Support Pack. 4.0 Documentation In addition to this file, the following sources give information related to the Support Pack: - For a list of known issues, see CS1_ISS.TXT located at the root of the Support Pack. - For more information on the latest Support Pack issues, see TID 10070085. - Updated documentation on NetWare Cluster Services is available at www.novell.com/documentation. 5.0 Legal Information 5.1 Disclaimer, Export Notice, Copyright, and Patents Novell, Inc. makes no representations or warranties with respect to the contents or use of this documentation, and specifically disclaims any express or implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for any particular purpose.
