If you have NetWare® 5.x or NetWare 6, or you have upgrade protection on NDS®, the upgrade to Novell® eDirectory™ 8.6.1 is available for free for use in production environments.
If you are running earlier versions of NetWare, or do not have upgrade protection on NDS, you need to purchase Novell eDirectory 8.6.1 through a Novell distributor or reseller. The 56-bit version of Novell eDirectory 8.6.1 for all supported platforms is available for free for evaluation in non-production environments. If you want to run Novell eDirectory 8.6.1 in a production environment, you need to purchase the 128-bit version through a Novell distributor or reseller.
Because Novell eDirectory 8.6.1 uses the same NICI as NetWare, Novell eDirectory 8.6.1 will run as either 56-bit or 128-bit, depending on what NetWare is currently running.
The installation program requires a license for Novell eDirectory 8.6.1. Before installing, prepare a license diskette.

System Requirements
If you are using RCONSOLE, you need a ConsoleOne™ administrator workstation that has 64 MB of RAM (128 recommended) and a 200 MHz or faster processor.
Installing on a NetWare 5.x or NetWare 6 Server
For information about the correct version of DSREPAIR and where to run this utility, see Installing eDirectory for NetWare at the Novell Documentation Web site.
For NetWare 5.1 servers, install NetWare 5.1 Support Pack 2a or later.
At one point in the installation, the program requires you to enter an administrator's name and password. To complete the installation, you must return (Alt+Esc) to this screen and enter the name and password. If you neglect to do this, the program is unable to install the rest of the components.
