CAUSE: Extended memory is released if MSDOS's HIMEM or EMM386 is used. Memory was also released if NWDOS's HIMEM was used but the machine would run real slow. DPMI was set to OFF (DPMI=OFF) on the EMM386 line in config.sys file. SOLUTION: Once DPMI=OFF was changed to DPMI=ON the problem disappeared, and extended memory was released upon exiting Autocad. Apparently Autocad 12 is written as a DPMI application, and so if DPMI is set to OFF (DPMI=OFF) the memory will not be released. The problem was compounded everytime Autocad was launched because more memory was being used and not released causing the machine to run slower each time until all memory was occupied and then the machine would hang.
