TITLE: Error Writing when Trying to Stack a Drive DOCUMENT ID: TID020820 DOCUMENT REVISION: 1 DATE: 27Apr1994 ALERT STATUS: Yellow README FOR: NA NOVELL PRODUCT and VERSION: NOVELL DOS 7.0 ABSTRACT: NA --------------------------------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER: THE ORIGIN OF THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL TO NOVELL. NOVELL MAKES NO EXPLICIT OR IMPLIED CLAIMS TO THE VALIDITY OF THIS INFORMATION. --------------------------------------------------------------------- SYMPTOMS: Unable to compress a drive using stacker. The user was trying to stack the D: drive and would get an error: "There has been an error writing the directory "D:\MAS90\MR". Please run a disk repair utility to investigate." The user would enter on OK and then get: "ERROR EXECUTING C:\NWDOS\CREATE.COM." CAUSES: Stacker says that the maximum number of files that can be in a subdirectory that can be successfully compressed is 2048. This user had subdirectories with 3000+ files in them. TROUBLESHOOTING: Tried CHKDSK, Norton's Disk Doctor, Norton's Calibrate, and PCTOOLS' Verify, but no errors were found on the drive. SOLUTIONS: The options are to copy the files to another drive or location, compress the drive, and then copy the files back onto the stacked drive, or to break up the subdirectories into subdirectories that have fewer than 2048 files in them. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Any trademarks referenced in this document are the property of their respective owners.
