SYMPTOM:

The SETUP routine that copies the drivers for the scanner will not
run.

The user has a ScanPlus color scanner by PlusTech. They have a SETUP
routine that copies what they call the "TWAIN" drivers to the hard
drive and makes the appropriate changes to the AUTOEXEC and
CONFIG.SYS files.  When SETUP is executed, however, it comes back
with the message

"The SHARE program is running on this computer.  Please remove the
SHARE program and then try to install again."

It then dumps you back to a DOS prompt.  If you delete SHARE*.* from
the hard drive and boot the machine vanilla with the F-5 key you will
get the same message.

CAUSE:

What is happening is this.  Very early in the SETUP's routines, it
tries to use FCB to close a file that it never opened.  Novell DOS
sees that this is a bogus operation and tries to tell it so.  SETUP
responds by displaying the above error message and bailing out to the
prompt.

MS DOS doesn't care that this SETUP routine is doing this, and
reports back that the file was closed OK---SETUP then finishes its
install procedures.

PlusTech techincal support's response is that it works with MS DOS,
therefore compatiblity issues with Novell DOS 7.0 will not be
addressed.

SOLUTION:

Boot the machine with MS DOS to install these drivers.  After they
are installed, the scanner works just fine.
