TITLE: ASSIGN Command Documentation Not Clear DOCUMENT ID: TID015196 DOCUMENT REVISION: 1 DATE: 03MAR94 ALERT STATUS: Yellow README FOR: NA NOVELL PRODUCT and VERSION: NOVELL DOS V7.0 ABSTRACT: NA --------------------------------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER: THE ORIGIN OF THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL TO NOVELL. NOVELL MAKES EVERY EFFORT WITHIN ITS MEAN TO VERIFY THIS INFORMATION. HOWEVER, THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THIS DOCUMENT IS FOR YOUR INFORMATION ONLY. NOVELL MAKES NO EXPLICIT OR IMPLIED CLAIMS TO THE VALIDITY OF THIS INFORMATION. --------------------------------------------------------------------- SYMPTOMS: When typing multiple ASSIGN commands, the previous assignments are erased. CAUSES: The ASSIGN command has been changed from the way it worked with DR DOS to work like the old MS-DOS ASSIGN command. (MS-DOS no longer ships the ASSIGN command with 6.x.) If you enter ASSIGN A=C then enter ASSIGN B=D later, the "A" assignment will be overwritten. The documentation (DOSBOOK or the command line help), however, does not clearly explain how this command works. In fact, the command line help leads you to believe that it takes an ASSIGN command by itself to clear previous assignments. MS-DOS documentation explicitly tells you that future uses of ASSIGN will clear all previous assignments; however, the Novell documentation does not. This is mostly confusing for DR DOS users that are used to being able to type in multiple ASSIGN commands without losing the former ones. SOLUTION: If you need to assign multiple drives, then place them all in one ASSIGN command as shown in the following example: ASSIGN A=C B=D x=y --------------------------------------------------------------------- Any trademarks referenced in this document are the property of their respective owners.
