SYMPTOM:

After installing Novell DOS on a system that had DR DOS 6.0 and
Stacker 4.0, EMM386 Protection errors were returned when users
accessed the Stacker volumes.  Other users were able to access the
Stacker volumes; however, they were unable to run any applications.

CAUSE:

The Stacker 4.0 CONFIG.SYS drivers, STACKER.COM and SSWAP.COM, must
not be used with Novell DOS 7.

TROUBLESHOOTING:

If EMM386.EXE is not loaded, the users are able to access the Stacker
volumes without a problem.

SOLUTION:

1:   To update the system to the appropriate Stacker 4.0 drivers, do
the following:

     1.   Boot your machine from the hard disk.

     While booting your machine, press the <F5> function key on
STARTING DOS... prompt to bypass the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT
files.

     2.   Run the Stacker 4.0 install from the floppy diskette.

          This will modify the CONFIG.SYS by removing the following
commands:

          DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM
          DEVICE=C:\STACKER\SSWAP.COM

     The install will also create a C:\DBLSPACE.BIN file and copy
STACKER2.BIN file to the C:\ directory.

     3.   Reboot your machine.

     Now you should be able to access each the Stacker volume without
a problem.

2:   Manual Install and Update:
     The DBLSPACE.BIN and STACKER2.BIN files can also be manually
installed by doing the following steps:

     1.   Copy STACKER2.BIN from the Stacker 4.0 install disk 1 to
the C:\ directory.
     2.   Copy the STACLOAD.BIN file from the Stacker 4.0 install
disk 1 to the C:\STACKER directory.  From the C:\STACKER <subdir>,
type the following command:
          COPY /B STACLOAD.BIN+STACKER.COM C:\DBLSPACE.BIN.

     3.   Remove the following lines from the CONFIG.SYS file:
          DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM

          DEVICE=C:\STACKER\SSWAP.COM
     4.   Reboot your machine.

     You will now have access to the each Stacker volume.
