TITLE: Stacker Error Messages DOCUMENT ID: TID14949 DOCUMENT REVISION: 1 DATE: 20MAY94 ALERT STATUS: Yellow README FOR: NA NOVELL PRODUCT and VERSION: Novell DOS 7 ABSTRACT: NA --------------------------------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER: THE ORIGIN OF THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL TO NOVELL. NOVELL MAKES EVERY EFFORT WITHIN ITS MEANS TO VERIFY THIS INFORMATION. HOWEVER, THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THIS DOCUMENT IS FOR YOUR INFORMATION ONLY. NOVELL MAKES NO EXPLICIT OR IMPLIED CLAIMS TO THE VALIDITY OF THIS INFORMATION. --------------------------------------------------------------------- ISSUE: STACKER BOOT TIME ERROR MESSAGES MESSAGE1: X: = Y:STACVOL.xxx Cannot find STACVOL file - NOT MOUNTED EXPLANATION1: This message suggests that a STACVOL.xxx file has been deleted or the STACKER.INI is incorrect. ACTION1: If the STACVOL.xxx file has been deleted, the STACVOL.xxx file may remain UNDELETED as long as you have not written additional data on to the drive that contained the STACVOL.xxx file. Otherwise, UNDELETE will not be able to recover the STACVOL.xxx file because a portion of it has been written over. The STACKER.INI may be searching for a STACVOL.xxx file on the wrong drive. Check the STACKER.INI file to make sure each line that loads a STACVOL.xxx file points to a drive that actually contains a STACVOL.xxx file. EXAMPLE1: /C:\STACVOL.XXX,SW MESSAGE2: X: = Y:STACVOL.xxx Updating Stacker allocation map...OK EXPLANATION2: This message suggests that the data on a compressed drive does not correspond to Stacker's internal table for keeping track of where that data is located. ACTION2: Do nothing. Stacker will adjust this automatically. MESSAGE3: !!! Stacker not found to relocate - nothing done. EXPLANATION3: This message indicates that the STACKER.BIN device driver is not loaded and cannot be put into Upper Memory by the STACHIGH device driver. ACTION3: The STACKER.BIN device driver needs to be in the root directory of the bootable partition. STACKER.BIN has the (R)ead only, (H)idden, and (S)ystem attributes attached to it. You can reinstall STACKER.BIN by SYSing the boot partition using a Stacker aware boot disk (with SYS on the disk). Or you can build STACKER.BIN by combining STACLOAD.BIN and STACKER.COM files using the following command: COPY /B STACLOAD.BIN + STACKER.COM STACKER.BIN ===================================================== STACKER RUN TIME ISSUES MESSAGE4: No error during bootup. After bootup a DIR on the compressed drive does not list the files that should reside there. EXPLANATION4: This suggests that the STACKER.INI file is bad or missing. ACTION4: Check the root directory for a (H)idden STACKER.INI file. If it does not exist, create one as such the following: /P=1 /DIR=C:\ /X:\STACVOL.xxx,sw where is the name of the directory that contains your Novell DOS 7 files. where /X is the drive that contains a STACVOL.xxx file. This line would be included for each of the drives that contain STACVOL.xxx files. MESSAGE5: UNSTACK gives the message "Unable to open STACVOL file x:\STACVOL.DSK for verification. ACTION5: Check to see that the drive that contains the STACVOL file has not been overwritten by a network drive. Log out and run UNSTACK again. ========================================================= STACKER MAINTENANCE ISSUES Third-Party Surface Scan and Fix: Run all surface scan and fix programs on the uncompressed portion of a Stacker drive (drive containing STACVOL.xxx) without the Stacker drivers loaded. If an error is found within the STACVOL.xxx file, do the following: 1. Exit the surface program. 2. Remove the attributes on the STACVOL.xxx file. 3. Run the surface scan on the drive again and allow it to fix any problems. 4. Return the attributes to the STACVOL.xxx file (+RSH). --------------------------------------------------------------------- Any trademarks referenced in this document are the property of their respective owners.
