At the DOS prompt, type SETUP and press . 2. At the SETUP menu choose Task Management. 3. You can select to load task switching or multitasking. Task switching lets multiple programs be loaded on the same machine, and you can switch between them. Only one program is running at a time. Multitasking lets multiple programs be loaded at the same time, and the CPU switches between the different programs fast enough that all programs appear to be running at the same time. NOTE: Multitasking requires a 386 processor or greater, while task switching will work on 286 processors and above. 4. Select Load MultiTasking software. 5. Select Configure Task Manager. 6. Several options are available for configuring the Task Manager. You can change the hot-key that pops up the TaskMgr interface menu, change the foreground to background ratio, change whether NetWare drives and mappings should be global or local, and set memory management settings. Refer to DOSBOOK online documentation for help on these parameters. Select the "Accept the above and continue" option, to accept the default values assigned by the SETUP utility for your system. 7. Choose Exit this screen. 8. Choose Save Changes and Exit. SETUP will modify your configuration files to reflect the options you have selected. 9. When the message box indicating SETUP is complete appears, press . 10. Choose Restart Operating System. 11. As the machine reboots, you will be asked whether to load the TaskMgr. Press Y for yes. Multitasking is now configured and running on your system. 12. Press and together (the default hot -key) to bring up the TaskMgr menu. Currently, there is only one task in the task list, which is COMMAND < 1. This lets you know that task #1 is the DOS command processor. Press to create a new task. 13. You are now at a DOS prompt. Type DOSBOOK and press to bring up the online documentation in this task. 14. When DOSBOOK is up, press + to bring up the TaskMgr menu. Notice that task #2 is listed as DOSBOOK, and task #1, which isn't currently running any programs, is still active. 15. You can switch between tasks by bringing up the TaskMgr menu and using the arrow keys (or a mouse, if you have a mouse driver loaded), and selecting the task number to which you want to go. Select task #1 and press . You are returned to the DOS prompt, which is task #1. Type EDIT AUTOEXEC.BAT and press . You will be taken into the Novell DOS 7 text editor with the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. 16. Press + to bring up the TaskMgr menu. Task #1 is now listed as EDIT. TaskMgr will list the currently running program as the task name in this menu. 17. Select task #2 and press . 18. Exit DOSBOOK by pressing and at the same time. You will be taken to the DOS Prompt. 19. Press + to bring up the TaskMgr menu. 20. Highlight task #2 and press to delete the task. You will be taken to the EDIT program, which is task #1. 21. Press and at the same time to exit EDIT. 22. Bring up the TaskMgr menu, and delete task #1. When asked if you want to remove TaskMgr, press Y for yes. Whenever you delete the last task loaded with TaskMgr, you remove TaskMgr from memory and no longer are running the multitasker or task switcher. To reload the TaskMgr, you can type TASKMGR and press . Using the technique in the previous steps, you can use the multitasker to always have a task running DOSBOOK, so the online documentation is always available for your help at any time.
