Dual Boot (OS/2 and Novell DOS 7) Dual Boot is the most practical method of installation for OS/2 with Novell DOS 7 users. Before installation, take care to observe the noted precautions. Make sure that there is at least 40 MB available as the primary partition. OS/2 2.0 can take as much as 34 MB of disk space; OS/2 2.1 can take 39 MB; and Novell DOS 7 can use 8.5 MB of space. Do not compress the primary drive. Although Stacker makes a version for both OS/2 and Novell DOS, it is difficult to get both operating systems to recognize the partition and is not recommended. Do not Enable Security. OS/2 will not recognize the existence of a hard disk if Novell DOS 7 Security is enabled, and it will fail to install. The following is explained in the OS/2 Installation Guide: 1. Novell DOS 7 must be installed on the disk before installing OS/2. 2. Copy COMMAND.COM to the NWDOS directory and edit the CONFIG.SYS file to read: SHELL=C:\NWDOS\COMMAND.COM C:\NWDOS OS/2 is now ready to install. Multi-Boot (OS/2, Novell DOS 7 and a Third Operating System) Using the Multi-Boot method described in the OS/2 Installation Guide, perform the following steps listed: 1. Prepare the drive with the OS/2 FDISK. You can prepare the drive using the Novell DOS 7 FDISK; however, this will only add an additional step as OS/2 will do the same through the installation. 2. Set up the BootManager Partition and other operating system's partitions. This should include all partitions to be installed. The OS/2 partition can be an Extended or a Primary partition. Novell DOS requires a Primary DOS C: partition, as does any version of DOS. If you have more than one physical drive, you can create two primary partitions (one on each drive); however, Novell DOS will need to be installed to the C: drive. If you elect to create more than one Primary partition on the first physical drive, only one will be visible at a time. Novell recommends that OS/2 reside on the D: drive and Novell DOS on C: drive. This will allow transfer of data and maximum disk drive usage. 3. Install OS/2. This can be installed to a Primary or an Extended Partition. During the installation, it is necessary to reboot the system several times. After the disks are loaded (printer and screen drivers), it is not necessary to reboot to install Novell DOS 7. If you do reboot, skip step 4. 4. Open a DOS box in OS/2. 5. Format the C: drive. Formatting the C: drive from the DOS box instead of from the OS/2 box is important because OS/2 does not format the drive correctly for DOS versions. 6. With the Novell DOS 7 installation diskette in the drive, go to that drive and type INSTALL. After completed, INSTALL will want to reboot the system. This will close the DOS box but not restart OS/2. If this was the method chosen, it is possible to start another DOS box and run SETUP so that when Novell DOS 7 is booted, it is completely configured and ready to run. 7. Install the third operating system. 8. Boot OS/2 and run FDISK to make a partition installable. Discussion of the Boot Procedure under Boot Manager BootManager works differently than with what most DOS users are familiar. A good understanding of this will alleviate many of the problems associated with combining Novell DOS 7 with OS/2 and the BootManager. When OS/2 is installed and the BootManager option is chosen, OS/2 will want to run FDISK on the drive to prepare it for use. The optimum configuration for BootManager, OS/2, and Novell DOS 7 is a three-partition system on one physical drive. Other partitions can exist as well as other drives; however, these three partitions must exist. The OS/2 FDISK will create the BootManager Partition, the OS/2 partition and can create the Novell DOS 7 partition. The Novell DOS 7 partition will need to be a primary partition. After creating these partitions, the OS/2 FDISK can make a partition "Installable." When a partition is made "Installable," it is the partition that an installing operating system will recognize the partition as the Bootable Partition. This partition is not formatted and must be prepared before installing Novell DOS 7 on to this partition. If a drive is not made "Installable," then Novell DOS 7 will select the first available drive. Normally, this is the only existing Primary Partition on the drive for DOS. OS/2 cannot install without making the partition "Installable" first. Note: Errors may result if installation of Novell DOS 7 is done on any drive other than a Primary DOS C: drive. OS/2 will prepare the drive during INSTALL, using High Performance File System (HPFS) or a File Allocation Table (FAT) file system. Novell DOS 7 does not automatically format a drive during install. Because the Novell DOS 7 FDISK will format the drive when creating the partition, INSTALL will assume the drive is formatted if a partition exists. Before installing Novell DOS 7, make sure the partition has been formatted. If the Novell DOS 7 FDISK utility is used to make the partition Active, it will need to be used again to make the BootManager Partition Active. Without doing this, only Novell DOS 7 will boot and the BootManager will never be accessed. After the BootManager Partition is set Active, all future boots will first go through this partition before booting Novell DOS 7 or OS/2. If an additional DOS is desired, having more than one Primary DOS partition is necessary. Only the OS/2 FDISK utility can create this second Primary DOS partition. This partition will not be visible when booted under Novell DOS 7, because the Novell DOS 7 partition will not be visible while booted under the other version of DOS. It is also possible to install OS/2 to a Primary DOS partition; however, Novell recommends using an Extended Partition so that it can still be used when booted under DOS. Some operating systems, such as UNIX, do not require a DOS partition. These operating systems will prepare the partition during installation; and in most cases, these partitions are not accessible by Novell DOS 7.
