NOVELL TECHNICAL INFORMATION DOCUMENT TITLE: Novell Client Service Pack 2 for Windows NT TID #: 2954142 README FOR: nt46sp2.exe NOVELL PRODUCTS and VERSIONS: Novell Client 4.6 for Windows NT ABSTRACT: This file contains updates for the English verion of Novell Client v4.6 for Windows NT. NetWare 4.11/4.2 servers require an update prior to the installation of this Client Service Pack. The server update is located in TID <@@/cgi-bin/search/tidfinder.cgi?2952441,2952441@@>. ----------------------------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER THE ORIGIN OF THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL TO NOVELL. NOVELL MAKES ALL REASONABLE EFFORTS TO VERIFY THIS INFORMATION. HOWEVER, THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THIS DOCUMENT IS FOR YOUR INFORMATION ONLY. NOVELL MAKES NO EXPLICIT OR IMPLIED CLAIMS TO THE VALIDITY OF THIS INFORMATION. ----------------------------------------------------------------- INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: OPTION 1 - Run Client Service Pack Installer, SETUPSP.EXE *********************************************************** To install the updates for the Novell Client v4.6 for Windows NT, run the SETUPSP.EXE located in the PRODUCTS\WINNT\I386 directory. OPTION 2 - Update Client Source Files and Re-install Client ************************************************************ To update the client source files on the network, copy these updates into their respective directory on the server. For example copy all the files and directories from PRODUCTS\WINNT\I386 to SYS:PUBLIC\CLIENT\WINNT\I386. Then run SETUPNW.exe to install the complete Novell Client v4.6 for Windows NT, including the Client Service Pack. SETUPSP.EXE has the following functionality for both Windows 95/98 and Windows NT: 1. It checks the first two fields of the client version in the registry against the client version in the setupsp.inf file. If they are the same, it continues. If not, it terminates. 2. It checks the service pack version in the registry against the version in the setupsp.inf file. If the version in the registry is less than the version in the inf, it installs the support pack. If not, it terminates. The Novell Client Service Pack install options: In the SETUPSP.INF file there are two options to help administrators roll out the Client Service Pack. [ServicePackOptions] ForceInstall=No ForceReboot=No If the ForceInstall is set to "YES" allows the Client Service Pack to be installed regardless of the currently installed version. This is helpful when the Beta Client Service Pack has been installed and a new beta or the released version needs to be installed. If the ForceReboot is set to "YES" the option Window giving the user a choice whether to reboot or not reboot is removed. The Novell Client Version information is stored in the following locations: Windows NT: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Novell\NetWareWorkstation\CurrentVersion The Persistent Server Cache is a feature enhancement to NWFS.SYS, which stores server names and internal network addresses in a cache. The cache is persistent which means that the cached data is available after the machine was rebooted or shutdown. If a server was not accessed for 21 days, the entry will be removed from the cache. The cache improves the performance when the client needs to connect to a server. After the client has resolved a server once, it stores the name in the cache and no longer needs to send GNS or QGS request. The mechanism ensures that the internal network address will be verified to be associated with the correct server name. This feature is disabled by default. To turn on this feature you have to set the following registry key: HKLM,"System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetwareWorkstation\Parameters" DWORD "ServerCacheTimeout" ="15" This value configures the number of days an entry is stored in the cache. When this value is set to "0", the feature is disabled. ISSUE: Fixed in the Service Pack 2 for the Novell Client v4.6 for Windows NT.
