NOVELL TECHNICAL INFORMATION DOCUMENT TITLE: Novell Client 3.4 update C TID #: 2968607 README FOR: 34pkc.exe NOVELL PRODUCTS and VERSIONS: Novell Client v3.4 for Windows 95/98 ABSTRACT: 34PKC.EXE contains updates for the Novell Client for Windows 95/98. These files can be installed on the Novell Client 3.4 for Windows 95/98. Patch release history: 02Apr2004 - Original Beta Release of 34pkc.exe 04Oct2004 - Public Release of 34pkc.exe. No files were changed. ----------------------------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER THE ORIGIN OF THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL TO NOVELL. NOVELL MAKES ALL REASONABLE EFFORTS TO VERIFY THIS INFORMATION. HOWEVER, THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THIS DOCUMENT IS FOR YOUR INFORMATION ONLY. NOVELL MAKES NO EXPLICIT OR IMPLIED CLAIMS TO THE VALIDITY OF THIS INFORMATION. ----------------------------------------------------------------- INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: The following installation instructions assume that the Novell Client for Windows 95/98 v3.4 client has already been installed. Prior to installing any update you should ensure that you have a reliable backup. 1. Expand the self-extracting file 34PKC.EXE (this file) to a temporary folder. 2. Open the folder. 3. (recommended, but optional) Rename the existing files (with a .old extension, for example) which will be replaced with this patch kit in the following location. \Novell\Client32 CLIENT32.NLM IPHLPR.NLM SRVLOC.NLM TRANNTA.NLM \Windows\System NWAPP32.DLL Do not reboot before continuing! 4. Right-Click on _34PKC.INF and then click on INSTALL. 5. You may be prompted to reboot. If you are not prompted to reboot, be sure to reboot the machine in order to complete the installation of these files. Another method to install is to manually copy and replace the existing files as follows. Keep in mind that some of the files might be currently accessed by the operating system; to work around this (which is only true if you manually copy the files) you can rename the original files and then copy the new files as follows: 1. Copy the new CLIENT32.NLM into the \Novell\Client32 directory. 2. Copy the new IPHLPR.NLM into the \Novell\Client32 directory. 3. Copy the new TRANNTA.NLM into the \Novell\Client32 directory. 4. Copy the new SRVLOC.NLM into the \Novell\Client32 directory. 5. Copy the NWAPP32.DLL into the \Windows\System directory. == OVERLAYING THE 34CLT95e.exe INSTALLATION SET == If you want to do an overlay (an installation of Novell client v3.4 together with this patch), please copy the files to the 3.4 installation set as follows: 1. Copy the new CLIENT32.NLM into the \IBM_ENU directory. 2. Copy the new IPHLPR.NLM into the \IBM_ENU directory. 3. Copy the new TRANNTA.NLM into the \IBM_ENU directory. 4. Copy the new SRVLOC.NLM into the \IBM_ENU directory. Note that NWAPP32.DLL is already in the 3.4 client installation set, but is not installed by SETUP.EXE. ZENworks customers who require this file will need to use another method (such as ZENworks) to deliver NWAPP32.DLL to the Windows 95/98 workstations. ISSUE: This collection of Post-3.4 patch files fixes multiple issues, including the following: Fixes to CLIENT32.NLM 1. Fixed several deadlocks and blue screen issues when reconnecting file handles during a cluster failover. In normal operation most of these errors would never be encountered. (275596) 2. This build provides the capability to specify cluster virtual IP addresses and cluster objects in the registry. This information is added to either the bad address cache or the bad name cache and flagged so that those entities will never be returned as bad. If this feature is used properly, there is no longer a requirement to turn off the name cache (via Advanced Settings). The attached file, SAMPLE CLUSTER CONFIG.REG, is a sample .reg file that illustrates how to implement this configuration. Note that the scheme used is similar to the way that DAs are specified for "Service Location." There is no GUI, so the .reg must be used. 3. "%REQUESTER_VERSION" in the log in script returns the wrong client version. See TID 10089541. (356634) Fixes to IPHLPR.NLM and TRANNTA.NLM 1. DHCP Options 85 - 87 don't work on Win9x as they do on WinNT/2000/XP. See TID 10060580. (354977) Fixes to NWAPP32.DLL (Unchanged from 34PKB.EXE) There are no fixes to this file. It is the same as the one in the shipping version of the 3.4 client. NWAPP32.DLL is a ZENworks for Desktops (ZfD) file, and the installation of this file has moved from the client to the ZfD installer. However, NWAPP32.DLL was left out of the ZfD 4.0 installer set, so it does not get installed by either the Novell Client or ZfD 4.0. This can result in errors being returned when attempting to configure a policy. See TID 10090322 for details. This patch corrects the problem by copying NWAPP32.DLL to the \windows\system folder, if you use the 34PKB.INF installer. Otherwise, you will need to copy the file manually. (Note that NWAPP32.DLL is available in the zfd32sp3.exe patch, but it is included here for your convenience. Fixes to SRVLOC.NLM 1. 3.4 Novell Client fails to issue SLP packets when using AT&T Dialer. See TID 10091739. (363492) 2.3.4 Client hangs using CN when connecting with AT&T Dialer. See TID 10091739.
