version of VisualAge for Java, please refer to section 3.0 before installing
VisualAge for Java, Version 3.0.2. 1
Installing VisualAge for Java, Version 3.0
If you have installed the Feature Installer runtime, then installed
an OS/2 Fixpak, you will need to reinstall the Feature Installer runtime before
installing VisualAge for Java. Before you install the
product, check the following things:
- You have enough swap space.
50 MB free space on your swap drive may
be required.
- You have an additional 10 MB available on your boot drive.
- Your
Netscape Navigator window is the appropriate size to view the installation
instructions in. After installation begins, you cannot resize the window.
- Insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive.
- Run install.exe from the root of the CD drive.
- In the Installation Selection window, select one of the following:
a) Select Install Netscape
Navigator if you do not have Netscape Navigator, version 2.02 or 4.04 on your system.
b) Select Install Feature
Installer if you do not have the Feature Installer or installed Netscape
Navigator after the last installation of Feature Installer.
c) Select Install VisualAge for Java to begin the installation of VisualAge for Java.
Follow the
on-screen instructions.
- Reboot after installing VisualAge for Java.
2.2 Installing
additional components
later
To install additional VisualAge for Java components
after initial installation, insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive, and run
install.exe from the root of the CD drive. Select the components that you want to
install from the Drive, Directory and Component Selection panel.
Refer to section 3.1
for information about migrating from version 2.0 of VisualAge for Java.
Refer to section 3.2
for instructions on manually migrating your user data from version 1.x of VisualAge for Java.
3.1
Migrating from VisualAge for Java, Version 2.0
Migration from Version 2.0 to Version 3.0 of VisualAge for Java is automatic. The Version 3.0 installation program automatically uninstalls Version 2.0. Automatic migration
Follow these steps to migrate from Version 2.0 to Version3.0:
- Perform steps 1 to 3 from section
3.2. It is strongly recommended
that you create backup copies of your repository and resource files in case
a problem occurs.
- Install VisualAge for
Java, Version 3.0 by following these steps:
a) Insert
the CD-ROM into your CD drive.
b) Run install.exe from the root of the CD drive.
c) In the Install Selection screen, select Install VisualAge for
Java to begin the installation of VisualAge for Java. Follow the on-screen instructions.- Upon the completion of a successful upgrade installation, all of your
project resources and your repository data are automatically migrated to
Version 3.0 when you start the Version 3.0 IDE for the first time.
In the event that an installation failure occurs, you must manually
migrate your user data. You also must manually migrate your user data if the IDE
fails to start or if an error is encountered by the IDE when it is migrating
your user data. Follow these steps to recover from a failure and manually
migrate your user data: Manual migration
- Verify you have saved your repository and resource files outside of
the file directory tree.
- Uninstall the product completely. All Version 2.0 and Version 3.0
subdirectories and files should be deleted.
- Reinstall Version 3.0.
- Start the IDE.
- Perform steps 5 to
8 from section 3.2.
Once you have verified that your manual or automatic migration is
successful, you can delete the backup copies that you created in step 1.Attention:
The coexistence of VisualAge for Java, Version 2.0
and VisualAge for Java, Version 3.0 is not supported . Version 2.0 can be
installed on a system that has Version 3.0 installed, but the behavior of both
versions of the product will be unpredictable.
3.2
Migrating from VisualAge for Java, Version 1.x
If you have Version 1.x of VisualAge for Java installed on your
system, it must be uninstalled before installing VisualAge for Java,
Version 3.0. Follow these steps BEFORE uninstalling Version 1.x if you want to import your Version 1.x repository and resource files into
Version 3.0. - Version your projects and packages. Only versioned projects and
packages can be imported into the VisualAge for Java, Version 3.0 repository.
Refer to your VisualAge for Java online help for versioning
instructions.
- Save your repository to a new location outside your VisualAge for
Java directory tree. The file name and path of the repository is
x:\IBMVJava\ide\repository\ivj.dat, where x:\IBMVJava is the VisualAge for Java installation directory.
- Copy any resource files (such as images or sound files) used by your
Java applications to a directory outside your VisualAge for Java directory
tree. By default, resource files for each VisualAge for Java project are
located in subdirectories called
x:\IBMVJava\ide\project_resources\project, where x:\IBMVJava is the VisualAge for Java installation
directory and project is the name of the project with which the resources are associated.
- Uninstall Version 1.x.
Remove x:\IBMVJava directory, where x:\IBMVJava is the VisualAge for Java 1.x installation directory. Install Version 3.0. Start the IDE.
- You can now import packages and projects from your old repository
into the new repository. In the Workbench, select File > Import,
and then select the Repository radio button and click Next. In the Repository name field enter the path of your
saved copy of ivj.dat.
Then select the projects and packages that you want to import. You will not
be able to import any projects or packages that have not been versioned.
- To automatically add the selected projects to the workspace, select the
Add most recent project edition to the workspace checkbox. This
checkbox is only available when the Projects radio button is selected.
- Click Finish.
- Copy your backup copy of your resource files into the subdirectories
x:\IBMVJava\ide\project_resources\project, where x:\IBMVJava is the VisualAge for Java, Version 3.0 installation
directory and project is the name of the project with which the resources are associated.
- Once you have verified that your manual migration is successful, you
can delete the backup copies that you created in steps 2 and 3.
The following is a list of issues you should be aware of during installation: - If
the license agreement screen does not display, or an error message appears
instead of the license agreement, you must set your BEGINLIBPATH
environment variable to the following path before running the
install program:
<cd drive>\ivj30\install\LAP\JRE_Home\dll
For example, in at an OS/2 command prompt type the
following command, then run the install program
from that command prompt:
SET BEGINLIBPATH= <cd
drive>\ivj30\install\LAP\JRE_Home\dll;%BEGINLIBPATH%
where <cd drive> is the drive letter of you
CD ROM drive.
- You will need write access to the root "\" directory where VisualAge
for Java is installed in order to install the NetQuestion Search Server. You
will not have access to this directory if you attempt to install to a
NetWare drive. Drives to which you do not have write access to the root will
not be displayed in the drive selection list box.
- This installation requires
at least version 1.22 of the Feature Installer run time to be present on your system. This runtime consists of Netscape Navigator 2.02 along with the Feature
Installer plug-ins. The Feature Installer run time can be installed from the
main VisualAge for Java installation screen. The
files are located on the CD-ROM in a directory called firun_ns, under the
root.
- You must install the product onto an HPFS drive; however, the
installation program does not verify that the selected installation drive is HPFS. If
you select a FAT-formatted drive, the installation program will fail.
- You must not install the product to a (HPFS) path with spaces in its
name. If you do, error messages will be displayed during the installation
attributed to the program EAUTIL.
- During installation, you can select to change drives and directories.
You should first select the drive to install to, then the directory. If you
select the directory first, click anywhere outside the directory entry
to refresh the page before you select the drive.
- If you are planning to install Netscape 4.0.4 and FixPak 505 on a
DBCS OS/2 system, you must install first FixPak 505, then Netscape 4.0.4
before installing VisualAge for Java, Version 3.0.
- You must have 10 MB available on your boot drive; Feature Installer
will create an inventory object for the installation on the boot drive, as
well as a temporary object.
- The installation requires an amount of disk space based on the size
of the files which will be copied initially. However, to allow for expansion
in the repository, and to allow for additional space requirements by the
help system installation, make sure that there is at least 50 MB of extra space on the drive you are installing to.
- If a disk on your system has more than 4 GB free space, and Feature
Install, Version 1.22 has been installed, the disk space indicator will
subtract 4 GB from the actual amount of free space. Install Feature Install
Version 1.23, provided with the product to correct the space calculations.
- Error dialogs are modal, but in some cases, they might not be
displayed on top of the active window. If an error dialog is displayed,
activating another window may inadvertently hide the dialog. If this happens,
use the drop-down task list located on the Warp Center and select the
Desktop. This will minimize all windows other than the error message.
- On non-English systems, the disk-space indicator on the right-hand
side of the Drive, Directory and Component Selection panel may not appear the first time that page is loaded. If this occurs, select a
different drive from the left-hand side of the page, and the disk-space
indicator will appear. You will then be able to select the drive you want.
Attention! The installation cannot continue unless the disk-space
indicator has been successfully displayed.
Recovering from a failed installation
To recover from a failed installation, you must perform the following steps:- Remove the directory "OS2\INSTALL\VisualAge for Java" and its
subdirectories, if they exist, from the boot drive using the command line, or through
"Drives" in the "Warp Center". If the boot drive is a FAT drive, the
directory will be "OS2\INSTALL\VISUALAGE".
- Delete the files "OS2\INSTALL\fi.ini" and "OS2\INSTALL\fi.bak" if
they exist. You will need to remove their read-only attributes using "attrib-R <filename>" before deleting.
- Delete the "VisualAge for Java" inventory object:
a) On your boot drive, open the folder "OS2\INSTALL\Installed Features".
b) Open the folder "VisualAge for Java
- Inventory". This is the inventory object.
c) Select the top object listed by
clicking on the check box, and then click Uninstall button.
Attention: Using the mouse to click on the checkbox may not
successfully select the item. If this occurs use the mouse to highlight the top
object listed, and use the space bar to select it before clicking Uninstall.- Restart your system and the installation program.
Installation
problems results in unusable system
If there is an installation problem resulting in an unusable system,
perform the following tasks to remove all IBM VisualAge for Java components from
your system:- Delete the desktop folder for IBM VisualAge for Java.
- Delete all product files found in the directory where you installed
IBM VisualAge for Java (for example, C:\IBMVJava).
- Perform steps 1 to
4 from "Recovering from a failed installation" to
remove the Feature Installer objects.
- Ensure you have enough swap space before beginning the uninstallation process— 50 MB free space on your swap drive may be
required. In addition, make sure that there is an additional 10 MB available on your boot drive; Feature Installer
will create a temporary object during the uninstallation process.
- If,
during booting of the system you obtain the error "SYS1718: The system cannot find the file
x:\OS2\INSTALL\IBMLANLK.SYS", confirm the error by pressing Enter, edit the file
x:\config.sys, where x: is your boot drive, and remove the following two lines.
DEVICE=X:\OS2\INSTALL\IBMLANLK.SYS
X:\OS2\INSTALL\IBMLANLK.LST
RUN=X:\OS2\INSTALL\IBMLANLK.EXE - If an attempt to uninstall the product using the Uninstall icon
in the product folder on the desktop fails, complete the uninstall by following step 3
in "Recovering from a failed installation". Shut down and restart your system after deleting the inventory object.
- Your installation directory is not removed during the uninstallation
process. Once the uninstallation process is done, you can remove it by deleting it
and all of its subdirectories, either through the command line or through
"Drives" on the Warp Center.
5.0 Browser
configuration for online help
The VisualAge for Java installation program checks your browser
configuration and offers to change it automatically so you can view online help. If
you select Yes, localhost: 49213 and 127.0.0.1 are added to your proxy exception
settings. If you select No, you may not be able to view online help. If you select
No, and later decide you want to view online help,
you can manually change your browser configuration to the correct settings.
Refer to the Online Help Release Notes for instructions on how to
correctly configure your browser for viewing online help.
