SUMMARY

If a printer works under the 3Com 3Share operating system environment in MS-DOS mode, but stops working when placed under Microsoft OS/2, the problem may be due malfunctioning parallel ports and the different methods MS-DOS and MS OS/2 use to handle printing to parallel ports.

If the computer's parallel ports for some reason do not generate the interrupts that inform the host to send more data, printing continues under MS-DOS, which polls ports to see if they are ready for more data. OS/2, on the other hand, requires port-generated interrupts, and if they are not received the printer may operate sporadically or be declared offline.
