Error Running Setup to Install LAN Manager: 3 Causes (99236)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft LAN Manager 2.2
This article was previously published under Q99236 SYMPTOMS
After you install Microsoft OS/2 1.3 on a Microsoft LAN Manager 2.2 server
you are prompted to reboot the computer. When it starts again a prompt
asks if you want to continue with the LAN Manager installation; if you
choose NO then later decide to install LAN Manager, you must run Setup
from the OS/2 setup diskette. Doing this, you may encounter a message
stating that "an error was encountered while determining file type HPFS
or FAT of your active disk drive." If you do, the computer hangs before
you get to the LAN Manager Setup screen.
CAUSE
This error message may be issued for several reasons, three of which are
not obvious and often are not considered when troubleshooting:
- There may be a hole in your SCSI drive chain where you have removed
or installed a disk drive lately.
- The SCSI drive chain may not be terminated properly per manufacturer
specifications.
- The computer's CMOS settings may not be correct.
RESOLUTION
Check the SCSI drive train for evidences of the first two conditions.
For possible CMOS problems there are several things to check. Floppy
drives must be set for the right types (1.44 MB, 1.2 MB, 720K, or 360K).
Also check to see that memory settings are correct for your computer's
memory. It also is advisable to check the sections in CMOS that do not
seem relevant to the problem, because bad CMOS settings are known to
to cause peculiar problems.
These are quick and easy checks to make before you look into other areas.
