The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1
  • Microsoft LAN Manager 2.1a
  • Microsoft LAN Manager 2.2

This article was previously published under Q99185

SUMMARY

The Micropolis 1664 drive cannot recognize more than 1024 cylinders on the boot drive of a server disk.

CAUSE

PC BIOS limitations prevent LAN Manager from recognizing more than 1024 cylinders on the boot drive of a server disk. The Micropolis 1664 drive does its own cylinder translation and it conflicts with LAN Manager's inability to handle disks with more than 1024 cylinders.

RESOLUTION

You can get Micropolis 1664 drives to work with LAN Manager by formatting the drive so that:

  • sector mapping is set to 63
  • 1024 cylinder truncation is turned OFF
  • track mapping is set to NO
