SUMMARY

If you are using Microsoft Project, you cannot open a file saved in the MPX file format if the file was saved with a space for the list separator. If the list separator is a space, you will receive the following error message when you attempt to open the file:
An invalid MPX record was encountered (line #1). Field not valid. The file cannot be opened.

MORE INFORMATION

In Microsoft Project, when you open a file that was saved in the MPX file format, Microsoft Project strips away the space at the beginning and end of each field for each record. If the list separator is a space, this list separator space is also stripped away and Microsoft Project has no way to determine the start and finish of each field.
