INTRODUCTION

Whenever you use the user interface to manually disable the Microsoft Windows Live OneCare Firewall, you are prompted to run the Firewall Connection Tool instead of turning off the firewall. This article describes the Firewall Connection Tool.

The Firewall Connection tool helps you identify and resolve some common firewall and connectivity issues. You can start the Firewall Connection tool by clicking Firewall Connection Tool on the Firewall tab under View or Change Settings.

You may be tempted to turn off the firewall to circumvent some common connectivity issues. The Firewall Connection Tool includes the following list of issues that can be solved without turning off the firewall:
  • How to connect a Microsoft Media Center Extender device to a Windows-based computer.
  • How to connect a Microsoft Xbox 360 to Microsoft Windows Media Center.
  • How to connect to a Cisco brand virtual private network (VPN).
  • How to connect to a Microsoft VPN.
  • How to connect to a Nortel VPN.
  • How to share an Internet connection among computers.
  • How to watch Internet video and play online games.
To use the Firewall Connection Tool to solve these issues, follow these steps:
  1. Open Windows Live OneCare.
  2. Click View or change settings.
  3. On the Firewall tab, click Advanced settings.
  4. Click the Ports and Protocols tab.
