You are prompted to reformat an SD card that is already formatted when you resume Windows XP from standby or hibernation (925319)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2, when used with:
    • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
    • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You insert a Secure Digital (SD) card into a USB 2.0 card reader that is attached to a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  • You open Windows Explorer or My Computer to view the SD card.
  • You put the computer into standby or hibernation.
  • You replace the SD card with a different SD card.
  • You resume the computer from standby or hibernation.
In this scenario, Windows Explorer may not correctly display the new SD card volume information after the computer resumes. For example, you may receive the following message even though the SD card is already formatted:
Device needs to be formatted

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the SD card is replaced when the computer is in a low-power state. The problem occurs in this scenario because no notification message is sent to user-mode applications when the device is replaced. Therefore, Windows Explorer may display incorrect volume information for the SD card, or may incorrectly determine that the SD card needs to be formatted.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:
  • Close all Windows Explorer windows, and then reopen Windows Explorer, or My Computer.
  • Remove the SD card, wait for a few moments, and then re-insert the SD card.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
