Error message when you try to install the MSDE part of Small Business Accounting: "MainEngineThread is returning 1603" (925209)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) part of Microsoft Office Small Business Accounting, you may receive the following message:
Error: MainEngineThread is returning 1603
Failed to connect to server. Error: 0x800401F0

CAUSE

This problem occurs because an instance of SQL Server was previously installed and was not completely uninstalled from the registry and from the Program Files folder.

RESOLUTION

Then, reinstall Small Business Accounting.
