An Excel chart object is not updated in a PowerPoint presentation when the chart object is opened in Excel 2003 (924296)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. A Microsoft Excel chart object is in a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation. This presentation is on a computer on which Microsoft Office Excel 2003 is installed. You open the chart object, you change the chart data, and then you save these changes. Then, you return to the PowerPoint presentation. In this scenario, the Excel chart object is not updated.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The QFE_ONTARIO registry DWORD value is enabled. This value is described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

    300523 Embedded Excel worksheets shrink when you edit them in PowerPoint 2000

  • To open the chart object to change the chart data, you right-click the Excel chart and then point to Chart Object. Then, you click Open.
Note This problem does not occur if you use either of the following methods to open the chart object to change the chart data:
  • You double-click the Excel chart.
  • You right-click the Excel chart and then point to Chart Object. Then, you click Edit.

RESOLUTION

How to obtain the hotfix
