The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 Service Pack 1
  • Microsoft Virtual PC 2004

SUMMARY

Application or software virtualization programs let you redirect a program's dependencies from the host operating system to an alternative location. The virtualization program performs many functions to enable this functionality. These functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Registry virtualization
  • File system virtualization
  • Kernel components such as semaphores, mutexes, and so one
  • Namespace coexistence and redirection
  • COM and DCOM objects
  • Services
  • Fonts
  • Initialization (.ini) files

Microsoft uses the Microsoft SoftGrid component to provide this functionality. Third-parties also produce programs that provide similar functionality. These programs vary in features and functionality. You may experience an issue with a Microsoft product that is running in a third-party application or software redirection program or in a third-party application or software virtualization environment.

INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Microsoft support policy for Microsoft programs that are running in a third-party application or software redirection program, or in a third-party application or software virtualization program.

MORE INFORMATION

We do not test Microsoft products that are running in third-party application or software redirection programs or in third-party application or software virtualization environments. Additionally, we do not support Microsoft programs that are running in this kind of environment. If you do not have a Premier-level support agreement with Microsoft, we require the issue that you experience to be reproduced in an environment that is not running in a third-party application or software redirection program or in a third-party application or software virtualization program. If the issue that you experience is unrelated to the third-party virtual environment, we provide support for the Microsoft program in same manner in which we provide support when the program is not running in a third-party virtualization environment.

If you have a Premier-level support agreement with Microsoft, we provide commercially-reasonable efforts to investigate the problem that you experience. We also provide commercially-reasonable efforts to investigate potential problems that might exist with Microsoft software running in a third-party application or software redirection program or in a third-party application or software virtualization environment.

As part of this investigation, we may require that the issue be reproduced apart from the third-party application or software program or apart from the third-party application or software virtualization environment. If the issue that you experience is not related to the third-party application or software program or the third-party application or software virtualization environment, we provide support for the Microsoft program with which you experience the issue in same manner in which we provide support when the affected product is not running in a third-party application or software program or in a third-party application or software virtualization environment.

Note Microsoft programs may not work as expected in a third-party application or software program or in a third-party application or software virtualization environment.
