SYMPTOMS

You experience problems when you use a Microsoft update product or service. For example, you experience problems when you use one or more of the following products and services:
  • Automatic Updates
  • Windows Update
  • Microsoft Update
  • Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) 2.0
  • Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)
  • Microsoft SMS 2003 Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates (ITMU)

CAUSE

These problems may occur because some of the Windows Update Agent 2.0 files are missing or corrupted. Windows Update Agent 2.0 is required to use these products and services.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install Windows Update Agent 2.0. To obtain the Windows Update Agent 2.0 installation package, visit one of the following Microsoft Web sites, depending on the operating system that your computer runs:

Prerequisites

Restart requirement

You must restart your computer after you apply this software update.

Setup information

The wusetup command uses the following syntax:

WUSETUP [/wuforce | /quiet | /norestart]
  • /wuforce Force install of Windows Update Agent even if it is already there.
  • /quiet Quiet mode (no user interaction)
  • /norestart Do not restart when installation is complete in quiet mode

The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time.
