You experience problems with programs that are not Terminal Services aware after you install security update 917422 on a computer that is running Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (924066)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP4
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4
SYMPTOMSYou install security update 917422 (MS06-051) on a computer that is running Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 and that has Terminal Services enabled. After you do this, you experience the following problems with programs that are not Terminal Services aware: - These programs cannot read their initialization (.ini) files. Therefore, the settings or parameters for these programs may not be correct when these programs start.
- These programs cannot write to their initialization (.ini) files. Therefore, these programs cannot save their settings or parameters.
- These programs cannot create temporary (.tmp) files.
You experience these problems with programs that try to read or write to files that are located in the Windows directory. CAUSEThis problem occurs because of a regression error in security update 917422 (MS06-051) for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4. This regression error causes the GetWindowsDirectory System Information function not to return the correct directory information to certain programs. These programs are ones that are not Terminal Services aware and that are running in a Terminal Services environment.
For example, the GetWindowsDirectory System Information function may return "C:\Winnt" when it should return "C:\Documents and Settings\username\Windows."
