SYMPTOMSAfter you install the updates in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-016, you may be unable to open or to run some programs. CAUSEThis problem occurs because the Microsoft Windows operating system cannot find the executable files and the DLL files that belong to the programs. After you install the security bulletin updates, the Windows operating system enables the system path variable to be longer than 1024 characters. This is true for any program that is installed after you install the security bulletin updates. However, the maximum length of the variable can only be 1024 characters. When you try to open the program, the system path is truncated to 1024 characters, and the truncated version is written to the registry. Therefore, the Windows operating system cannot find the program files. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
