When you use the SMS 2003 Operating System Deployment (OSD) Feature Pack to install an image on an SMS client computer, the installation process is unsuccessful (923922)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You use the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Operating System Deployment (OSD) Feature Pack to install an image on an SMS client computer. The SMS client computer uses Internet Protocol security (IPsec) to communicate with an SMS management point or with an SMS distribution point. When the client computer starts the Microsoft Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE) phase of the installation process, the client computer cannot connect to an SMS management point or to an SMS distribution point. Therefore, the installation process is unsuccessful.

CAUSE

This problem occurs only when you try to install or to upgrade the Microsoft Windows XP version of Windows PE. The Windows XP version of Windows PE does not support IPsec.

Note You can use the Microsoft Vista version of Windows PE to connect to site systems that use IPsec, assuming that the appropriate IPsec policies are being used.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, stop the IPsec service, and then clear the IPsec cache. To do this, customize Windows PE by adding a task that contains the following command:

net stop policyagent

You must run this task before the computers restarts and before Windows PE starts.

For more information about how to customize Windows PE, see the SMS 2003 Operating System Deployment Feature Pack User's Guide.
