INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Microsoft Office Proofing Tools 2003 issue that is fixed in the hotfix package that is dated August 10, 2006.

Issues that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix package fixes the following issue that was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
  • On August 1, 2006, the new German Spelling Reform rules went into effect for Germany, for Switzerland, and for Austria. These rules were proposed by the Council for German Orthography on August 1, 2005. The rules were adopted by the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) on March 2, 2006. And, the rules were confirmed by the Council of Minister Presidents on March 30, 2006.

    In compliance with these new rules, a new German spelling checker for Microsoft Office Proofing Tools 2003 was created. This hotfix package contains the new German spelling checker that is in compliance with the new German Spelling Reform rules.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.
To download the update, follow these steps:
  1. Click Save to save the office2003-KB923884-DEU.exe file to the selected folder.
  2. In Microsoft Windows Explorer, double-click office2003-KB923884-DEU.exe.
  3. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
  4. In the Type the location where you want to place the extracted files box, type c:\923884, and then click OK.
  5. Click Yes when you are prompted to create the folder.

Client update (single computer)

After you have downloaded the file, follow these steps to install the client update:
  1. In Windows Explorer, locate the c:\923884 folder, and then double-click Ptk.msp.
  2. Follow the steps to install the update.

Administrative update

If you installed Proofing Tools 2003 from a server location, the server administrator must update the server location with the administrative public update. The administrator must then deploy that update to your computer.

If you are the server administrator, follow these steps:
  1. In Windows Explorer, locate the C:\923884 folder, and then double-click PTK_readme.txt.
  2. Follow the steps in the PTK_readme.txt file to install and to deploy the hotfix.

Prerequisites

The following list contains prerequisites for the hotfix package:
  • The optimized version of this hotfix is a post-Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 2 hotfix. To install the hotfix, you must have Office 2003 Service Pack 2 installed.   • The full-file version of this hotfix is also the administrative version of this hotfix. You can install this version of the hotfix on a computer that is running Office 2003 with Service Pack 2 or Office 2003 with Service Pack 1. However, we have tested this hotfix more extensively on Office 2003 with Service Pack 2 than on Office 2003 with Service Pack 1. If you install this hotfix on a computer that is running Office 2003 with Service Pack 1, some file conflicts might occur. We support this configuration, but we do not recommend it.

Restart information

You do not have to restart your computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix is not replaced by any later hotfix.

Registry information

To use one of the hotfixes in this package, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.
