INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services issue that is fixed in the hotfix package that is dated August 14, 2006.

Issue that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix package fixes the following issue that was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article.

A user receives an "Access denied" error message when the user tries to access a Data View Web Part even though anonymous access is enabled in Windows SharePoint Services

Consider the following scenario. You configure the virtual server that hosts Windows SharePoint Services to use Basic authentication and anonymous access. You add a Data View Web Part to a Web Part page in a site. The Data View Web Part shows content from a document library in which anonymous access is enabled. A user connects to the site and then tries to access the Data View Web Part. However, the user is prompted to enter his or her user name and password. After the user enters his or her user name and password, the user receive the following error message:
Access denied.
This problem occurs if the following conditions are true, in the order in which they are presented:
  1. The user connects to a different Windows SharePoint Services site. Then, the user accesses a document library in which anonymous access is not enabled.
  2. The user connects to the site that contains the Data View Web Part. Then, the user tries to access the Data View Web Part.
