FIX: A Web service or a Web service client may fail with a stack overflow when you call the Web service method in the .NET Framework 1.1 (923419)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1

SYMPTOMS

In the Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1, a Web service or a Web service client may fail with a stack overflow when you call the Web service method.

Note The stack overflow may occur on the server during automatic Web Services Description Language (WSDL) generation. For example, the problem may occur when you type the URL of a Web service together with the "?wsdl" parameter in a Web browser, or when you add a Web reference to a Visual Studio project.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the XmlReflectionImporter class uses a recursion algorithm to reflect a WebService class. This problem occurs if the Web service has a schema that has a deep level of type nesting or if the process has a limited stack size.

For example, a stack overflow may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The Web service schema has 500 nested types.
  • The hosting process is W3wp.exe and has a stack size of 256 KB.
