SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You install the security update that is associated with security bulletin MS06-008 on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer. When you try to stop the Remote Registry service, the service does not stop. For more information about the security update that is associated with security bulletin MS06-008, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

911927 MS06-008: Vulnerability in WebClient could allow remote code execution

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Remote Registry service uses a legacy remote procedure call (RPC) API. This RPC API causes the Remote Registry service to share a Svchost.exe process with the following services:
  • SSDP Discovery Service
  • TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
  • WebClient
The RPC API will only stop the Remote Registry service if the other services that share the Svchost.exe process are stopped first. The RPC API waits for the other services that share the Svchost.exe process to stop. Therefore, when the other services do not stop, the Remote Registry service does not stop either.
