Xbox 360: You cannot play content on the Media Center Extender (923341)


The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you try to watch videos or listen to music that is being streamed to a Media Center Extender from a Media Center PC, you receive a "Video Error" or an "Audio Error" message on the Xbox 360 console.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when one of the following conditions is true:
  • The necessary ports are not open in the firewall of the Media Center PC for the computer to stream media content to the Media Center Extender.
  • The Media Center Extender does not support the media format that is being played.

THINGS TO TRY

  1. Confirm that the media content can be played on the Media Center PC.
  2. Test to determine which types of content you cannot play on the Media Center Extender. Determine whether this issue occurs with specific files, with files of a particular type, such as just music or just TV, or with all media types.
  3. To make sure that the content that you are trying to play is supported by Media Center Extender, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

  4. If no content will play on Media Center Extender, the problem may be a firewall configuration issue. Review your firewall configuration for blocked ports. For more information about required ports, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

  5. If only some content will not play, try to re-encode this content to the WMV 9 format with WMA Standard or WMA Pro audio by using Microsoft Windows Media Encoder.
